Four Measures Listed To Curb Elm Disease

The Dutch elm disease is spreading across large areas. Foresters recommend pruning and burning all dead material, removing bark before storing elm wood, drying stored elm wood in a building, and burning any elm trees killed by the disease. Clues include woodpecker activity, stripped bark on limbs, shepherds crooks, and lack of spring buds. Early detection aids control efforts.

Wisconsin notes drop in dairy cow numbers

Wisconsin, America's leading dairy state, reported 2,580,000 cows and older cows kept for milk and 1,015,000 heifer calves and young heifers for future milk cows at the start of 1948. Compared with last year, milk cows fell by 51,000 and young stock for future milk cows declined by 16,000.
