Out of Old Nebraska Why well diggers shaped a frontier tale
James C. Olson notes the Nebraska Sandhills harsh water problem for plains pioneers. Dutch Joe Mrewe drilled wells to 260 feet, proving underground flow at 1884 in Cherry County. Over seven years he dug 6006 feet of wells, losing life to cave-ins. Nels Christensen also dug deep wells, some to 300 feet, his tools housed in the state museum. Many more well diggers faced collapse and death, yet expansion depended on their courage.
