Frigid blast Saturday left lasting snow drifts three to four feet across county roads and eight inches on the level despite strong winds. Temperatures stayed below zero through the weekend with a brief warm spell Sunday and renewed cold Monday as northerly winds caused more drifting on secondary routes.
An eleven jurors panel awarded Julius Bernt of Shelby 25000 against Wise Service Co of Grand Island after eight hours deliberation. The fire at Bernt cafe and filling station on October 15 1945 followed a collision between Molden’s car and a transport owned by Wise Service Co. The blaze caused a total loss to Bernt property. The case was heard by Judge Lightner in Columbus with delays due to a blizzard.
The Livestock Improvement Association met January 28 and elected 1947 officers: Art Deeter president Lavelle Lamoree vice president Burdette Baker treasurer. New farmers joined service on Arthur Peterson Stromsburg W G Werrmann Stromsburg Placed Sandell Polk Ralph Rhoades Stromsburg and Raymond Swanson Silver Creek. Service totaled 157 on 8 farms with 47 first breedings 20 second breedings 8 third breedings 5 fourth breedings 4 fifth breedings 2 sixth breedings and 1 seventh. Lunch and social time followed. Inclement weather postponed the January Extension Directors meeting to February 8 when officers will be elected and committee members set. At the January 27 annual meeting directors were elected Arthur Deeter Mrs Alfred Grossnicklaus and Fred Wieseman. The 1947 work program prioritizes 4-H Clover work Women’s Project Soil Conservation and Home Improvement/Farm Planning. Neighborhood interests like pruning grapes and landscape work near Shelby will be addressed in February demonstrations. The York Polk Hamilton DITIA met in York February 1 to close books and plan 1947 activities. Wesley Gompert resigned as tester. The tester role offers dairying experience. pay ranges from $5.00 to $7.50 per day with meals and lodging provided. Any interested young man may contact the County Extension Office for full details.
Rex Dunn met his wife and two daughters in Omaha after they arrived from South Wales by boat. Mrs Dunn Jenetta 4 and Patricia 9 months reached New York Friday. Dunn served in the U S Army in that region and had not seen Patricia since moving to the United States last October. The family plans to live on the Fred Dunn farm north of Osceola with Patricia joining her parents in town.
Farmers show growing interest in the Soil Conservation Program with 160 applications since formation two years ago. Over the past year the district established 1415 acres of contour planting 4.8 miles of terraces 185 acres of grassed waterways 339 acres leveled for irrigation two soil saving dams seven acres of windbreaks and irrigation system improvements. One terrace and two grassed waterway demonstrations were held with attendance exceeding 100. District Supervisors purchased a tractor scraper a disc terracer and a packer for cooperative use.
The State Game Commission restarted full production of game fish with a 1946 output of 2,184,000 fish, up from 1,483,000 in 1945, produced at Gretna Turks Valentine and North Platte hatcheries. Salvage crews under Paul Todd recovered 357,000 game fish in 1945 and 2,412,000 in 1946, with 49,009 pounds of rough fish removed in 1945 and 130,000 in 1946.
In Greens Chapel the WSCS plans a February 13 gathering at the homes of Mrs. J. L. Hurd and Mrs. George Steever. Liberty Local No. 573 shifts its February meeting to February 21. Martin Hoffman Jr and Ester Lackey enjoyed Sunday evening calls at John Bills home. A baby boy was born January 30 at Stromsburg hospital to Mr and Mrs F W Bedient.

Mrs George Heckman and Jeanine visited Clatonia. return trip Wednesday. Osceola Project Club met at J Carder Throckmorton home with 17 members and 2 visitors. lesson on avoiding financial and property tangles given. Don Byers family and Mrs A Snider hosted at Grand Island with Dr and Mrs C Fonda. Walter Koehler Ingleside California returned to start care for County Farm. Mareh start. Price Pickett and Agnes Augustine engagements noted. Augustine marrying Duane Schmoker next week. Webster Mills discharged from St Francis Hospital returned home. daughter Mrs M E Cotter and son returned to San Francisco.

Mrs. Mary West Mary Ella Peterson daughter of John and Mrs Peterson was born November 1 1874 in Minoak Illinois and died January 27 1947 at St. Francis Hospital Osceola aged 72 years 2 months 27 days She lived much of her life near Silver Creek and later moved to Osceola with her daughter She leaves a daughter Lulu Ward a son Louis West a stepson Stanley West a stepsister and a brother Interment was at Osceola cemetery Funeral services were at Kepner Funeral Home last Thursday
