Polk plans a Birthday Ball next February to honor the President and raise funds to prevent and cure Infantile Paralysis. Endorsed by the Polk Commercial Club, proceeds go to national HQ and local victims, with all but minor costs donated. Citizens urged to attend and buy tickets for a good cause.
Mrs. Elsie G. Campbell of Hordville Nebraska files for absolute divorce from Harold G. Campbell in district court alleging extreme cruelty excessive liquor use and failure to provide child support. She seeks custody of their 9 year old daughter and 15 dollars monthly child support while noting the husband has not returned since March and lives with relatives. Attorney J T Stanton of Stromsburg represents the plaintiff Aurora News.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Peter hosted a dinner Sunday with guests including Mr and Mrs Earl Johnson and Billy, and Mr and Mrs Oscar Fredrickson and La Verne. The T C W club meets Thursday January 26 with Mrs Ronald Sarraw for a pot luck lunch. Herman Jones and sons attended a Saturday supper at Elmer Carlson's for Myron Jones and Mr Carlson's birthday anniversaries. Dorcas meets Friday evening with Evelyn Oquist, Francis. Beulah Toline entertains. Mrs John Johnson returns from Stromsburg hospital under care of daughter Mrs Adolph Forss. Maye Beardsley and Bob visit Roger Headley on Sunday. Choir practice Sunday at 2:00 PM.
The Cold Storage Locker System at City Grocery & Market nears completion and could be ready February 1 per Mr Stromberg. Workmen remodel the rear of the store to fit the lockers, the refrigeration unit is installed, and the lockers should be installed by the weekend with only minor details left.
Vernard Ball 21 son of Ralph Ball of Shelby was found dead from a shotgun wound in a barn on Glenn Augustine’s farm eight miles north of Shelby. Sheriff and county attorney ruled it death by own action with no inquest. He had worked for Augustine and showed intent to hunt earlier. Funeral held at U B Church Shelby with Rev. Plymesser. interment in Shelby cemetery.
Swede Plains M and Church E E Pengelly minister with worship at 10:00 Sunday School at 11:00. Plans for next Social and Entertainment event include speaker N W Gaines from the Extension Department of the College of Agriculture. Lutheran Church announces centennial service next Sunday at 10:30. Free Mission Church hosts Sunday School at 10:00 and mid week service Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
Sunday School at 10 and 11 worship at 11 at Free Methodist Church. YP at 6 45 and evening service at 7 30. Parent’s Day planned for Sunday School families. Mid Winter Institute at Central City on Saturday. Bishop Oxnam brings evening service guest. Family Night Tuesday features Chancellor Schwartz and fellowship supper with chicken dressing and salads.
Rev. R M Bailey leads Junior and Senior BYPU sessions at 6:45 and 7:00 with Evening Service at 7:30. Tuesday prayer meeting and Bible study at 7:30 in the parlors. Orchestra and choir practices scheduled. January business meeting to elect nominating and auditing committees. Church urges willing members to engage in work.
Polk Swedes beat Clarks Town 40-8 after an early lead. Key Polk players included Max Peterson Don Peterson B Allison M Wright and Cowgill with Sandell and Cramer playing time. Next matches include York B Shelby and Palmer with a history of close finishes.
Relatives gathered Sunday at Mr. and Mrs. Victor Anderson home in Stromsburg to celebrate the birthdays of Miss Ama Anderson and Isaac Samuelson. Others present included Mr. Samuelson, Mrs. Harvey Lind, and children of Polk, Vernon Anderson, Vivian Warner, Denah Samuelson of Lincoln, and Mr. and Mrs. Carle Lots Anderson and son of Osceola.
The Farmer's Co Op Grain Association held its annual meeting at City Hall with about 25 stockholders and friends. President W J Fisher led the session as reports showed over 200 000 bushels handled and a net profit of 5581 69. George Anderson elected to succeed Martin Baack. dividend of 8 percent on stock and a patronage dividend of 1 cent per bushel declared to be paid in June.
A petition signed by over 200 Shelby citizens was sent to Senator Jay Hastings urging repeal of the auto testing law. Similar petitions have stalled the state house, with sentiment leaning toward scrapping the law as presently written. Enforcement efforts are not being pursued, and support seems limited to areas with heavy equipment investments.
Arborville and nearby residents shared a Sunday of visits and meals across Benedict, Stromsburg, Aurora, York, Bradshaw and Stromsburgs. Guests included the Shockey and Bedient families, the Harringtons, Johnsons, Merchant, Coon, Barr, Graves, Flick, Recknor and others, with casual gatherings at multiple homes and church activities noted. Mrs. Sterner's health showed slight improvement after transfer to Lincoln.
The piece criticizes George Norris for anger at Wall Street bankers who refused a 120 million loan to Nebraska Hydro districts to buy out the IowaNebraska entity. It claims Norris blames a power trust while opponents fear eastern regulation, implying local citizens are ignored.
Osceola grade basketball team defeated Polk grades 12 to 10 in a close game played Friday January 20. Neither side led by more than three points and Polk suffered its first loss of the year.
About five inches of snow, the heaviest this season, fell quietly on Monday morning. No drifts formed as calm conditions and warming temperatures packed the moist snowfall, delivering welcome moisture to the fields despite incorrect weather predictions.
The Commercial Club Slogan Contest announced last week has generated much interest with several entries and more expected. Entry is free and winners receive a five dollar prize.
A leader training meeting for current and aspiring discussion leaders will be held in Osceola Court Room on Monday January 30 starting at 10:30 am. Drummond Jones of Washington DC will speak on leading group discussions. Mr Holland of the Extension division will attend. Notify Farm Bureau Office to reserve chairs.
Agricultural agent Peterson announced the annual Farmer's Fun Feed will be at Scott's Hall, Stromsburg, February 14 at 6 30 p m. The event uses a covered dish luncheon with W H Brokaw, Nebraska Extension Service director, as main speaker. Program details to follow. The theme centers on Valentine's Day in a heart to heart talk.
Boy Scout Troop 103 Polk attended Meridian District Court of Honor in Bradshaw eight Scouts earned second class badges. Committeemen Frank Davis and Rev Pengelly plus Scoutmaster Cowgill joined. McFadden of Osceola demonstrated knapsack construction. Willis Elliot shared National Jamboree photos from Washington DC. An York trip included YMCA swimming tests and York Wayne basketball. The week closed with Girl Reserve meeting January 23 and Silver Fox patrol named with violet and silver colors.
The Walther League of Immanuel Lutheran Church hosted about two hundred attendees at Viking Hall for a Sunday evening fellowship. Edgar Rhode opened the program with a welcome and led a varied program of music, a playlet, group singing, and other activities. Knowledge and Service departments summarized the league’s year’s activities before a social hour and refreshments.
Under Frank A. Bard leadership the Progressive Shepherd Club and Sylvan Tree Club were organized Monday evening at Harold Hedlund’s home. Charles Fischer was elected Tree Club president with Hedlund as VP and Jones as secretary. Wenzell Hellstrom led the Sheep Club with Walgren as VP Jones as secretary and Bard as News Reporter.
Professor E. P. Moderow, after seventeen years as a teacher, tendered his resignation at Sunday services due to ill health. Classes are dismissed indefinitely while the school board decides on a replacement. The Moderows have not yet announced future plans but are expected to move for health reasons.
Mrs. George Otte and Mrs. John Wochner hosted twenty relatives and friends for a kitchen shower at the George Otte home in January. The event featured red white and black decor, a centerpiece with a miniature bride and groom, token gifts hidden around the house, and a two course luncheon served at the end.
The Faithful Workers Club met at Mrs. Emery Cramer’s home January 19 with fifteen members and four visitors. The meeting opened with Old Black Joe, then Velma Wallace spoke on Nebraska Indians. Winifred Lackey wore Indian dress and shared an Indian Summer legend. Refreshments were hosted by Kate Peterson and Bessie Williams. The group adjourned to meet with Mrs Otto Wallace February 22.
The Ladies Aid of the Methodist Church met last Thursday at Mrs. Ed Madison's home with Mesdames Kroger Kroger and Neal McNaught assisting. The program, led by Mesdames Johnson Dahlin Peterson, featured a round table discussion, poems by Mrs. Ross Goethe, and a solo by Mrs. Gordon Eno, closing with group singing and refreshments.
