Dancing will fill the Polk Ballroom next Thursday as the Benefit Ball raises funds for infantile paralysis relief. Sponsored by Commercial Club members led by Dr. D H Westfall, the Revelers Orchestra will perform. Tickets cost fifty cents per couple with local groups taking seventy percent of proceeds.
Under Paul Monson leadership the White Face Baby Beef Club voted to add two 4H projects this year Corn and Rope. Corn Club officers include Wesley Thelander president Vernon Thelander vice president Rudolph Carlson Jr secretary Elof Anderson news reporter. Rope Club officers list Rudolph Carlson president Wesley Thelander vice president Harley Youngland secretary Rudolph Carlson Jr news reporter. Both clubs complement the already organized Baby Beef group.
Miss Josephine Ratliff daughter of Mr and Mrs E J Ratliff of Polk wed Winston Lytle son of Mr and Mrs S W Lytle of York in a Wednesday ceremony. Rev Maude Mann of York officiated. The couple to honeymoon then reside on a York area farm.
A survey by the National Consumers Tax Commission reports Polk County families pay 286.20 annually in hidden taxes through higher prices on daily purchases. The analysis uses $1,835,000 in total county retail sales from the U S Bureau of the Census and notes local units nationwide backing the movement against unseen levies.
Local churches list service times Sunday School hours and midweek meetings. Includes Swede Plains Lutheran Free Methodist and Methodist notices with preaching times and choir practices.
Rev Bailey leads Sunday services and BYPU sessions with junior and senior groups. Guild Girls meet February 6 at Glen Hill with Jacqueline Lindburg and Mrs Bailey as leaders. Mission Circle plans February 9 at 2 PM focusing on Prayer for our Missionaries.
Mrs. Clair E. Howard, 27, died Tuesday after a week of illness at a York hospital. She was born in Stromsburg, daughter of Frank Marble, and is survived by her husband, an infant daughter, her father, four sisters, and four brothers.
Kenneth Samuels the farmer auctioneer, 234 miles south of Hordville, plans a major public sale on Monday February 6 at 10 PM to liquidate farm equipment. The lineup includes 101 head of livestock 10 horses 19 cattle 55 ewes 17 hogs two tractors power machinery and a large assortment of household goods with four auctioneers handling the sale. Free coffee will be served to attendees. Mrs Ethel Reins and daughter Mrs Carl Nichols of Lincoln visited at the former's sister Mrs C R Petersons home earlier this week.
A flurry of Sunday dinners and birthday celebrations fills York and area towns. Guests include the Bedients Green Wochners Wessel Flicks Emkens Reckners Lantzers and Shanks with many relatives visiting from Aurora Sergeant Bluffs and Denver. Family trips include Henry Cramer traveling to Denver for the Stock Show and W E Bedient visiting York for the weekend.
Mr and Mrs Walter Larson announce the birth of a nine pound baby boy on January 30 at Grand Island hospital. Mr and Mrs Faye Beardsley announce the birth of a son James Duane at Grand Island hospital on Wednesday January. Irene Forss hosted High Prairie girls for a six o clock birthday dinner on Friday January 27. High Prairie Club meets February 3 with Mrs Gestrine. Rev Anton Lundeen will preach Sunday morning. Choir practice Sunday at 2:00. Roger Headley and family visited Grand Island with their daughter Mrs Faye Beardsley. Mrs John Johnson visiting daughter Mrs Willard Adel son for a few days. Wm Larson and family visited Frank Bolton Wednesday evening. Arthur Swedenburg spent Friday evening with the Headley family.
A Tuesday fellowship dinner at the Methodist Church basement served a chicken meal to about 100. The program featured two orchestra numbers, a reading by Mrs. Glen Hill, a solo by the orchestra, and a talk by Chancellor Benjamin F. Schwartz of Nebraska Wesleyan.
Mr and Mrs Paul James entertained for Bettys birthday with guests including Mr and Mrs John Anderson Mr and Mrs Kermit Hultgren and children and Mr and Mrs Norris Anderson and family. Rev Leonard Hagstrom arrived from Chicago to take the Free Mission church ministry in Stromsburg.
The Polk County treasurer’s office was busiest Tuesday as late filers queued for 1939 license plates. County Treasurer Smith and staff issued 307 licenses before closing, bringing the year’s total to 2,792 and leaving about 1,000 plates yet to be issued. State patrols say no extra grace days will be granted for expired plates.
Agricultural Conservation office records show Polk County corn loans totaling 250 bushels with 125000 bushels sealed at 57 cents. Twarling Brothers of Stromsburg hold 1995 bushels sealed, while Mrs. F E Runauist receives the smallest loan of 124 bushels.
Polk High traveled to Shelby for their second game of the season, losing 24 to 9 as Shelby led from start to finish in a rough contest. The Polk Progress and The State Journal advertise a special offer for full-year copies.

Miss Edna VonHausen daughter of Mrs Laura VonHausen and Sidney Crow son of Mr and Mrs A K Crow tied the knot Wednesday evening January 25 at 8 pm at the First Lutheran Church in Long Beach California The couple both graduated Polk High School with Edna in 1935 and Sidney in 1933 They plan to reside at 1070 Loma Ave Long Beach California and are employed locally and in California with Suntag Drug Company and a Cold Storage Company respectively Their friends send best wishes from the Polk community.
Miss Maxine Fossberg and Donald Upton married Sunday afternoon January 29 at the Fossberg home with Rev R M Bailey officiating. Both graduates of Polk high school, Maxine in 1936 and Donald in 1937, with Donald employed by the Farmer's Cooperative Oil Association since graduation. The couple plans for the future were not announced.
Mesdames Robert Stenbock Donald Johnson Charles Carlson and Minnie Nicholson visited Central City on Thursday afternoon. Mr and Mrs T S Fisher were Sunday evening callers in Walter Fisher’s home and daughter near Arborville. Mr and Mrs Clarence Bryant and Bob visited Ed Sundberg’s home in Stromsburg on Sunday evening.
Viking Hall hosts John Deere Day on Tuesday February 7 sponsored by P T Wurtz and Son. Five new talking pictures will be shown two times to accommodate crowds with a farmers and families only 1 15 am session including a free lunch and a 7 30 pm public performance.
The Polk Swedes avenged an early season defeat by beating Palmer 34 to 24 Monday night. Polk jumped to an early lead and maintained it with strong passing and teamwork. High scorers were M. Peterson with 13 and D. Peterson with 8, while Cowgill added 7 as Allison and M. Peterson, D. Peterson, Wright, and Cowgill started.
Mrs. O. M. Bond, 82, a Polk county resident for over six decades, died Monday in a York hospital from pneumonia after a fall at her Gresham home that fractured her hip. She had recently recovered from cataract surgery. Survived by eight children, all in Polk county except Roy Bond of Lodgepole and Mrs. Charles Ryan of Loup City. her husband died ten years ago.
The Blue River Jungle 4-H club organized recently led by Miss Dorothea Bond. The group includes 16 members with five girls. four first year forestry members and 12 second year members. Officers elected: President Maurice Newcomer, Vice President Albert Krumbach, Secretary Jard Krumbach. First year members receive 25 free trees. second year members receive up to trees via Farm Bureau through the Clarke-McNary Act of 1926.
Mrs. Martha Ella Colman 78 died Friday at Hearild S Colman’s Los Angeles residence after wintering in California with her sons. A Ohio native, she came to Nebraska as a child and later lived in Holt county Osceola and Columbus before settling in Lincoln in 1905. She left three sons Dr A C Colman Floyd R Colman Hearild S Colman and a daughter Mrs Elva Clark. Funeral and burial were in Lincoln.
