The Commercial Club invites entries for a new slogan 10 words or less with a $5 credit prize. Open to all in the trade territory, entries due February 4 submitted to Leo Wurtz, secretary. winner to be announced at the February meeting.
Polk Swedes drop three straight by two points as final quarters slip away. Osceola game 25 23 loss after leading at three quarters, Central College 36 34 loss after leading 23 18 at half, Shelby game 16 13 final quarter. Max Peterson tops with 15. Don Peterson hoped back this week to boost remaining schedule.
Polk County farmers can order Clarke McNary seedlings for windbreaks or woodlots at 1 dollar per hundred. About 1400 trees, including broad leaf and evergreen varieties, are available through the Farm Bureau. 4-H forestry clubs must organize by February 15 to receive 25 free trees per member for year one and 35 for year two.

Polk Juniors opened with a 12 to 0 lead by halftime and shut out Clarks 18 to 2. First string featured Willits Peterson and Stanley, Freddie Smith center, Branting and Kenny Davis guards. Second unit included Miller Ostberg Lindberg Newton Gustafson. Willits led Polk with 6 points. Mustard scored Clark's two.
Mrs. N. E McNeely of Fullerton was a dinner guest in the home of A W Shafer on Wednesday.
A Polk County district court jury deliberated four hours before upholding the will of Charles Barefoot Peterson. Elmer Felton, the contestant, may seek a new trial and has 90 days to perfect an appeal to the supreme court after Judge Landis denied the motion. The case drew wide county attention as one of the longest on record.
The Farmer's Union of Nebraska presents an educational color film Under the Farmer's Union Tree on Friday January 20 at 8 pm at Rialto Theatre Stromsburg. Our Gang comedy One Wild Ride will be shown free tickets from local union secretary or Stromsburg Farmer's Oil Station. Henry Wegley will present the films.

An Osceola businessman received a typewritten letter from Mexico proposing a share of a 285000 dollar sum hidden in a trunk in a United States customs house. The writer signs only as L and asks for advance expenses to recover the trunk contents. The note bears a Torreon Coachh Mexico address and no signature.
The Sutton Register notes that despite predictions of small store extinction by national chains, many rural shops endure by evolving with times and embracing advertising. It recalls a 1895 Springfield Republican observation about department stores, mail order firms, and chains, and stresses persistent, informed marketing as a key success factor.
A Long Beach correspondent writes of California travel and salesmanship with remarks on the sunny state and its tourism appeal. In Aurora Nebraska, Citizens State Bank shareholders elect directors John Anderson and others, then appoint M E Isaacson as president and Oscar Strand as vice president. Isaacson resigns as secretary treasurer of eight National Farm Loan Associations to join Grand Island bank as assistant VP. he has a long history in regional banking and farm loans.
The Osceola Court House lobby hosted a large crowd of farmers for a Monday afternoon Sorghum and corn show judged by LaVerne Peterson of Butler County. Winners included Wesley Koehler and Elton Berck of Osceola in grain and forage sorghums, August Fischer of Osceola in corn, with prizes donated by local figures Wendell Swanson, Howard Sundberg, and Arthur Morrill.
The county begins a new run of farm schools next week focusing on hybrid corn. Farm Security Supervisor Walter Berck and agricultural agent Howard Peterson lead the sessions covering hybrids, production, and development. Schedule shows meetings at Victor, Osceola Court House, Ball, and High Prairie from January 18 to 26 with a soil conservation film at Osceola on January 24.
Elmer Tooker of Silver Creek formed a 4 H meat production club last week. Fifteen members, both boys and girls, may raise any meat animal such as pig sow calf or sheep. Glenn Hennings is President, Raymond Staroska Vice President, and Robert Tooker Secretary. Contact Mr Tooker to join.
A Project Club session at the Muse Theatre in Osceola drew about 275 farmers to a well attended lesson on Well Kept Farmsteads. Speakers highlighted pride in the home and windbreaks and garden value while emphasizing debris removal and moisture conservation.
Miss Ruth Bodine a local telephone operator went to Lincoln on Thursday January 12 to attend the 12 month Sales Club banquet at the Cornhusker Hotel. She earned the honor roll for all 12 months of 1938. Other area employees on the honor roll include Vivian Danskin Osceola and Gordon Eno Polk.
