Cubs Edge Genoa Then Fall to Clarks In Week Basketball

The Polk Cubs won 61 47 against Genoa in a tight first half battle then lost 50 2 to Clarks. Peterson scored 40 for Clarks as Genoa and Clarks dominated inside. Reserve scoring saw Jerry King hit 12 against both Genoa and Clarks, with Ken Bowers adding 11 in the Clarks win. The club’s second team also collected wins over Genoa 50 35 and Clarks 41 36. Youth Fellowship met at the Methodist Church with Anita Samuels in charge and Marilyn Hahn delivering a Renewed Courage lesson.

Lutheran Laymen Sponsor Sunday Film Showings

The Lutheran Laymen's League at Emanuel Lutheran Church will present two films this Sunday evening January 26. Youth For The Kingdom and Tournament of Roses Parade will be shown with the Lutheran Hour Boat winning top honors in the parade. Coffee and pie will be served in the church basement after the screenings.

The Polk Commercial Club held its annual steak supper at Holmes Cafe before electing Merle Stromberg to lead in 1953 with Arnold Neuhaus and Vern Jones as aides. Neuhaus becomes vice president and Jones secretary treasurer. Orpha Davis Nick McNaught Floyd Lyle head activities. highway 66 improvements remain a focus with Alton Wilhelms Everett Green and Charles Peterson heading the highway committee.

Former Polk Resident Clyde Willits Dies at 58

Clyde Willits 58, of Silver Creek, formerly of Polk, died January 19 in Hastings. He is survived by his parents Glen and wife, three daughters Zola Horn, Welcome Alt, Donna at home, and sons Wayne, Virgil, and Kenneth. Funeral and burial were in Silver Creek. The obituary notes family celebrations and local social visits in Polk area communities.

Polk Drives to Meet March of Dimes Quota

Polk fundraising lag persists as the March of Dimes total stands at 342.53 toward a 600 goal. Chairwoman Mrs. Floyd Lyle and co chair Mrs. Albert Sundberg urge additional efforts to avoid extra events and recall Polk’s 1952 polio epidemic.

Swede Home Pioneer Dies Tuesday

John Johnson aged 80, a Swede Home community pioneer, died Tuesday January 20. He leaves survivors including Adolph Forss and Mrs Svillard Adelson, three sons Harold Raymond and Conrad of Stromsburg, and several grandchildren. Funeral services are Friday at 2 pm at Swede Home Church with burial there.

Missionary Conference Rally At Local Baptist Church

A missionary conference rally was held at the Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Guest speakers included Rev. Robert Klingberg Rev. Albert Bergfalt Rev. Wyman Malmsten from Chicago and Rev. David Hammar from Greeley Colorado. Neighboring churches were invited and supper was served between sessions.

Winter Storm Drops Ice and Winds Across Region

A severe winter storm caused ice and high winds that lingered from Wednesday night into Thursday. Power and telephone lines failed in parts, with some areas without electricity up to 40 hours before most repairs by Friday night. Polk fared better with only one outage. Temperatures plunged to 18 below Friday morning as more snow and unsettled conditions returned later.

Taxation Deepens as Major Nebraska Legislature Issue

The Nebraska Legislature tackles taxation as its top problem with a proposed 50 percent valuation standard per bill by Sens. Earl Lee Arthur Carmody and Hal Bridenbaugh. Other measures seek state out of property tax, cap spending growth, reduce Class B intangible tax, and add county equalization reps. Also moves to lift hog cholera vaccine ban and appointment of Dr J L George as state veterinarian are noted.
