Polk County faces added charge for care of insane patients

County Commissioners learned a state law change on September 1 1935 requires funding for care of insane patients in state asylums. A bill for September 1 1935 to October 1 1936 totals 5 575 66 dollars, not yet paid but to be provided for if required. The 1937 budget also reflects a 1 000 reduction in the Mothers Pension Fund and a 2 000 Farm Bureau Budget, yielding a total estimate of 101 500.

Teachers Mid Year Institute in Osceola Saturday

Polk County teachers gather at Osceola High School on Saturday January 23 for a one day mid year institute. Notable speakers include Dr H E Bradford Miss Nettie Mills and Mrs Edna Shores with sessions on geography penmanship music and arithmetic games for grades 4 5 and 6. Normal Training departments from four county high schools invited with no admission fee.

Polk county farmers to hear 1937 Agricultural Conservation program

Farm groups will host a series of community meetings to present the 1937 Agricultural Conservation program and allow eligible voters to choose local committeemen. Letters will notify farmers of meeting times, with proxy voting not allowed and voting limited to one community per producer.

Presidents Birthday Ball Planned Here Next Wednesday

The Presidents Birthday Ball committee says preparations are complete for the event to be held next Wednesday evening. Hutch Miller and his Swing band will provide music for dancing. Proceeds go to the cure of infantile paralysis. Tickets are 50 cents per couple from Dr. Westfall, chairman. Plan now to attend.

Mother and Son Overcome by Gas in Arborville Home

Mrs. Pete Schrader and her son Farnum were overcome by gas while doing laundry in Arborville on Monday. Farnum returned inside to help and was overcome. Mr. Schrader, outside, entered the home, opened windows, and revived them.

County Officials Honor Longtime Local Officials

Osceola county commissioners in session approved resolutions praising W. P. Bill Miller for two years on the board and honoring W. W. Norton for more than ten years as County Judge. The actions reflect recognition from county leadership for sustained public service.

Osceola Burglary At Billard Hall Nets About 35 Dollars

A thief broke into the billard hall on Monday night and escaped with about 35 dollars in cash. Entrance was gained through the back door. Mrs. Harold Reed and her husband visited Aurora Sunday as guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fenster. Christine Andresen of York, aged 90, died at her daughter's home in York Friday. funeral services were held there Sunday. Mrs. R. L. Schroeder was taken to an Omaha hospital last week for pneumonia and remains as well as can be expected. Mrs. Frank Anderson hosted the Bid-a-wees at her home last Friday evening with a seven o'clock dinner and officer elections. Harold and Vincent Swanson of Swedenburg visited York last Tuesday. parents remained through the week. Eastern Star Kensington was hosted by Mrs. Clayton Rystrom Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. F. T. Butz, Mrs. John Rogers and Mrs. Sam Crouse assisted. The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society will meet next Tuesday at Mrs. Otto Horst’s home. Mrs. Phil Campbell leads the lesson. Mrs. Sylvia Fillman of York spent Friday and Saturday with Mrs. Millie Dahlberg.

Funeral for Carl Lyman Johnson Held at Stromsburg

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church for Carl Lyman Johnson who died suddenly Thursday while putting up ice. He was about 48, survived by wife, two children, his mother of Aurora, three sisters, six brothers, and was interred in Stromsburg cemetery.

One hundred twenty seven eighth grade pupils sat for mid year exams on January eighth. Subjects included Civics Penmanship General Geography Spelling Agriculture and Geography of Nebraska.

Seed corn shortage reported in Polk County survey

A Polk County farm bureau survey of 150 seed corn cards shows an 18 spotted seed corn shortage with 35 farmers lacking surplus seed. 966 bushels are available from those with excess and a list of farmers selling seed corn is being prepared for release at the bureau office.

Polk County farmers are offered two pasture planning meetings for 1937. E F Frolick crops specialist will discuss pasture experiences and problems.
