Polk Commercial Club Annual Meeting
About forty members of the Polk Commercial Club gathered at Schultz Cafe Monday evening for the annual meeting. Treasurer Leo Wurtz reported a treasury balance near $50, and officers were re elected. President Carl Schreelquist thanked members for cooperation, dues remained at last year’s schedule with a budget around $200, and the club deemed the year a success with a full activity schedule and no extra assessments.

The district court trial on the competency of the late Charles Barefoot Peterson continued into its third week with 15 witnesses testifying by Tuesday. Neighbors of the deceased dominated the witness list, sharing opinions on Peterson’s mental state. Indications suggest another week of testimony remains.

Polk High defeated Silver Creek in two close games on January 6. The first team won 29 to 28 and the seconds 25 to 23. It was Polk's first Golden Rod Conference game of the season. Next Friday January 13 Polk hosts Shelby High.

Legion Auxiliary Meets in Sundberg Home for January Session
The American Legion Auxiliary met Monday afternoon at Mrs. Oscar Sundberg's home with eight members present. The Rehabilitation Chairman reported sending toys to the Lincoln Gift Shop and to the Hospital. A decision was made to sell Auxiliary dishes from the hall. Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Sundberg were named to the committee. After a two course lunch the group adjourned to meet in February at Mrs. Frank Davis's home. Hostesses for January were Mesdames Oscar Sundberg and Henry Horstman.
Fire Department Holds Monthly Meeting and Plans School Visit
The regular monthly fire department meeting occurred at the new city hall on Tuesday evening. Members planned to send several to the Hireman's School at Grand Island next week. The Twentieth Century Club met Thursday at Mrs. Walter Green's home with nine members and four visitors. Dorothy Shockey, daughter of Mr and Mrs W C Shockey, is ill with pneumonia.

About 150 men and women crowded the district court room at Osceola Monday for the Taxpayers Alliance meeting. Grover Stapleman of Seward led the organization and officers elected were Henry Triba Osceola president Edith Pearson Osceola vice president and C W Carlson Stromsburg secretary. A constitution was adopted and county officials spoke brief talks.

Busy Polk County Court House Draws Crowds
Polk County courthouse buzzed with activity Tuesday as the Peterson trial drew a packed audience on the third floor and citizens crowded the second floor to plea for higher and lower expenditures from the new county board. Sheriff Peterson handled farm sales on the first floor while locals played checkers nearby, with federal offices also active. Farmers took the day off to visit the seat and review county business.

Marriages rise while divorces fall in Polk County 1938
Polk County records show 48 marriage licenses issued in 1938 up from 45 in 1937 while divorces dropped to a historic low with only two granted. Receipts in 1938 totaled 109 in fines versus 260 previously and inheritance taxes paid into the county judge’s office reached 520.50.

Boy Scout Troop Elects New Leaders At Polk Meeting
Boy Scout Troop 103 Polk held a Monday meeting at the school house. New leaders were elected Stuart Pengelly patrol leader Kenneth Davis assistant patrol leader Hilton Steelquist bugler Ted Alfreds treasurer scribe. A weekly 5 cent dues motion passed. They rent Cox's cabin for hikes and plan a York YMCA visit to pass swimming tests. The group will meet with the Girl Reserves next week. Two new scouts passed second class tests in signaling cooking first aid and other skills.

Former Polk County Couple Celebrates 50th Wedding Anniversary
