Polk Womans Club Meet Highlights Music Theme

The Polk Womans Club met January 4 at Mrs. Oscar Sundberg’s home. The program focused on music and world understanding with leaders Mrs. Arnold Isaacson Mrs. Paul Strand and Mrs. Paul Lemke guiding the session. Hostesses included Mrs. Oscar Sundberg Mrs. Gilbert Benson and Mrs. Clifford Benson.

Ice storm floods yard from standpipe overflowed water

Mr and Mrs Will Kroger awoke to five elm trees broken and iced over by sprays from a standpipe overflow caused by a failed automatic cutoff and high winds. City official Rolland Dahlin noted the light and water department failure.

Baptist Missionary Society Meets for January Session

The Baptist Missionary Society gathered Thursday January 13 in the church parlors. The topic was As The Stars Forever and Ever with devotions led by Mrs. George Otte and program chair Mrs. P W Aker. Hostesses were Mrs. Clifford Cramer Mrs Clarence Creech Mrs Ivan Cramer and Mrs Nettie Jones.

Polk High School News Bids State Tests in Osceola Next Week

The Normal Trainers will travel to Osceola on Saturday, January 15 to take State Teacher's exams. Prospective teachers receive good luck wishes as the semester nears its close with stiff tests planned for Thursday and Friday. The grade basketball team also heads to Osceola Tuesday afternoon aiming for another victory.

Swede Home News and Tragic Death Highlight Local Notes

Mr and Mrs Philip Waller and Cheri returned Friday after a three week visit with the Timm family in Moline. Clarence Barson died Thursday, and the community offers deepest sympathy. Visitors include Herman Ohlswager from Denver with the Olson family, John Evans and sons from Shelby Iowa with the Swanson family, Edwin Lewis and Ansel Fredrickson households, August Carlson with the Appannee family, and Enoch Peterson with Lloyd Hahn returning from California where they visited Hagestrom relatives and others.

Basil O Connell national head calls for 50 percent more funds for 1949 after 1948 polio epidemic. Polk County reports $2351.78 raised in 1948, $24000 locally spent since January 1948, debt repayments and Nebraska pool aid, with a $3500 goal for 1949.

Young Adult Group Meets at Methodist Church Parlor

The church’s Young Adult group spent a pleasant evening in the church parlors on Sunday. They viewed missionary films and films Gilbert Benson took on his trip to California and a fishing trip to Canada.

Auxiliary Meeting Highlights and Local Visits

The American Legion Auxiliary held an all day meeting on Monday January 10 with activities including tying a comfort making blood plasma holders and sewing carpet rags. A pot luck dinner was served at noon and hostesses served afternoon lunch. Local residents including Gordon Fossberg Harold Nelson Earl Bates Arthur Bates Max Sunderland and others visited relatives in Polk Stromsburg and Lincoln over the holidays and weekend dining with families and returning home.

Former photographer dies in Kansas City

Ernest H. Newton of Mound City Missouri dies in a Kansas City hospital on Thursday He was a former Polk resident and photographer and is the brother of Will Newton.

Christmas Cantata at Arborville

Arborville Congregational Church hosted a Christmas cantata performed by a 15 member choir directed by Floyd Merchant. The program moved through 11 musical sequences from Christmas Chimes to Crown Him with solos, recitatives, and choruses including Let Us Now Go and Star In The East. The choir featured Mrs John Wochner Mrs Floyd Merchant Mrs Elwood Tewell and several other sopranos altos tenors and basses. Kenneth Bedient served as the church organist with accompaniment.

Polk County Extension Plans 1949 Meetings and Events

Polk County Extension announces February 1 to 4 1949 events with talks demonstrations and exhibits for farmers and homemakers. A Fuh Frolic in the Student Union ballroom and the January 24 Swanson’s Hall meeting will elect directors and cover farm topics. A joint Dairy Breeders Assn meeting and Noxious Weed District session will feature panel discussions on spraying crops with different chemicals and machines. The program ends by 10 pm with films and public participation guidelines.

Veterans On Farm Training Enrolls Twenty at Osceola High

A class of institutional on farm training for veterans is under way at Osceola High School with 20 enrolled of a 25 cap. Admission requires an application to Maurice Newcomer, approval by the Agricultural Advisory Committee, and suitable farm conditions. The program funds include 125 monthly from government for school use and 125 for books, plus 200 monthly for supplies, with subsistence based on income.

Clarence Larson Killed in Tragic Farm Accident

Clarence G R Larson a respected Polk County farmer died January 6 1949 while inspecting a truck transmission at his Swede Home home four miles west of Swede Home The hydraulic lift box lowered trapping him between frame and box He was 55 years 10 months and 24 days Born February 12 1893 Swede Home Polk County Nebraska He served in WWI and was married to Edith Lind They leave five living children and other family members Services were held at Swede Home and a long card of thanks follows from the family.
