Lloyd Stromberg, manager of City Grocery & Market, plans a modern cold storage locker at the rear of the store. Ready about February 1, the system will hold 162 boxes and serve farmers and citizens, boosting Polk business by attracting local shoppers from neighboring towns. Watch columns for opening details.
Howells forms a WPA paving project to cover 40 blocks at an estimated total cost of 150000. Engineer Jos C Reynolds of Omaha leads the plan with 100000 funded by the WPA and 50000 by the city, including 12000 for intersections and 38000 to be assessed against property owners.
The Commercial Club holds its annual meeting next Monday at Schultz cafe. Dinner at 7 and business session at 8. Merchants and interested citizens urged to attend and share views. Dinner ticket committee includes P. T. Wurtz C. Marvin Fredrickson and Carl Steelquist.
Arborville and Stromsburg residents plus guests from York Unadilla Chester Blair Blair etc gathered across homes in a sequence of Sunday and New Year visits. Guests included Mr and Mrs Wallace Sherwood, Mr and Mrs Charles Wyatt, Mr and Mrs Emner Larson, Mr and Mrs Maynard Schrader, plus many others from Denver Polk Chester Lincoln Benedict and Stromsburg. Activities included meals, teaching duties, and a Young People class party with teachers and family hosts.

County Treasurer L. O. Smith reports a $18,955.14 increase in six month tax receipts from 1937 to 1938, totaling $136,855.14. About $10,000 was gained from tax remission opportunities ending December 31, but overall turnout was low. Auto licenses proceed at a steady pace with about 500 new licenses issued. February 1 is the license plate deadline.
Mesdames Carl Steelquist and Rodney Allison hosted the Polk Woman's Club meeting at the Steelquist home on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Oscar Sundberg and Mrs. Wallace Sandell led a program titled South America. Refreshments were served to 18 members.
Carl Lind, a maintainer on Highway 66 between Stromsburg and his wife, was seriously injured last Saturday when a drag calls a point near Burlington tracks caused his vehicle to crush Lind between two machines. He freed himself and drove to Stromsburg for aid, later found to have fractures on both legs below the knees.
The county 4-H club committee will meet Friday at 1 30 p m in the Court House to elect officers and set next year s program. Gordon Fredrickson will call the meeting to order and guide the program planning. Members and parents may submit suggestions to Mr Fredrickson or agricultural agent L Peterson before Friday. Harry Schultz of Marquette visits with friends here Monday.
After a nine day trial federal Judge Munger directed a verdict for Julius Bernt, a Shelby merchant, in a case tied to alleged misapplication of First National Bank funds. The government claimed about seven thousand six hundred two dollars in deficits and improper checks, but the court found insufficient evidence of criminal intent or an illicit agreement, dismissing the charges.
The Polk County Rural Chorus under Miss Olive McBeth meets January 10 at the Rapp Hotel. Sixty members are not accurate. the total women enrolled is 42. The chorus plans a January 16 public appearance at Muse Theatre with a Parmstead improvement lesson. Membership is open to any county woman, project club member or not.
Senator and Mrs. Jay Hastings traveled to Lincoln as the unicameral opened. Hastings sponsors bills to repeal the recently enacted truck law and the auto testing law in the new session.
The Swede Plains M E Church led by Minister Pengelly invites worship at 10:00 and Sunday School at 11:00 on New Year’s Day. The piece urges faithful worship as key to peace, cooperation with God, and a hopeful life. The Ladies Aid meets Wednesday the 11th at Mrs Henry Shostrom’s home. all welcome.

A note from the Free Methodist Church outlines Sunday services with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and sermons at 11 a.m. plus YPM S at 6 45 p m and 7 30 p m. A cottage prayer meeting is planned for Thursday at 7 30 p m. The parsonage gathering on December 17 brought groceries and good will to help the needy.
The Polk Commercial Club schedules its annual meeting next Monday praising President Carl Steelquist and Secretary Leo Wurtz for a year of success. Dues budgeting shown, out-of-town speakers credited, and support for community projects noted. Re-election of officers is urged, with Past President Frank Davis endorsing Steelquist.
Traffic fatalities in Nebraska dropped by about one hundred in 1938 compared with 1937. The state safety patrol receives much of the credit for the decline on the highways.
Leslie Adelson daughter of D. H. Wilson married John Adelson on Wednesday afternoon December 28 in York. The couple plans a honeymoon to Denver then will live on a farm south of Clarks where the groom has been farming.
New Year guests visited multiple households in Stromsburg and surrounding towns. Families hosted relatives from Osceola Lincoln Columbus and Polk counties while Clara Anderson returned to work after a Minnesota visit. Socials included parties at J A Westenius and Ekstrand households with assorted friends and the Samuelson Appleton group spending Sunday with local residents.
The county extension club plans a 1 30 p m Monday January 16 lesson at the Muse Theater open to farmers wives and town residents. Miss Rizpah Douglas and Howard Peterson will present with Olive McBeth leading the county wide ladies chorus making its first public appearance. Also planned is a sorghum and corn show with entry details to be announced next week.
