The Route 66 Riders held their annual supper January 4 at Polk Community Hall in Polk. Officers for 1969 were announced and a short business meeting followed with prize cards, homemade ice cream served, and plans for the next gathering at Carroll Flodman’s home.
The Goldenrod Conference basketball tournament shifts to Polk since Genoa’s new gym isn’t ready. Play begins Tuesday Jan 21 with Clarks vs Palmer at 7 pm and Genoa Osceola at 8:30. Lower bracket features Stromsburg vs Silver Creek on Jan 22 and St Edward Polk on Jan 24. Final rounds Jan 25 with two games. Admission is Adults 1.00 and Students 0.50.
Polk County Judge Eldon R. Johnson reports 1968 activity: 452 cases handled and 54189.51 dollars in fees fines inheritance tax and retirement. Court processed 251 criminal cases 192 traffic violations. The office issued 55 marriage licenses and 27 birth certificates. Full summary on Page 4.
The Polk Community Club will meet Monday January 20 at 7 00 PM. A potluck supper precedes the business session with casserole salad and pie on the menu. Officers to be elected. 1968 officers listed as President Norris Alfred Vice President Kenneth Werner Secretary Verland Widga Treasurer Linsay Darnall. A committee will plan the evening’s entertainment.
Bill Williams of Yutan sustained a back injury after falling 14 feet from a truck the day after Christmas. He had surgery on January 7 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. He is the son of Rolla Williams of Stromsburg, formerly Polk residents.
Polk area residents shared social visits through the week. Stankel from Hordville called on Hilmer Jones. The Lindburgs hosted Haggart and Lindburg guests. Flodmans hosted Baker family and guests from Hershey and Long Beach. Others dined with the Samuels, Shostroms, and Norquests while Connie Lindburg vacationed with grandparents. Kendall Sandell returned to Lincoln to resume studies at Nebraska University after holidays with Elwood and family.
The Polk Medical Clinic will be open Tuesday and Saturday from 9:00 A M to 5:00 P M A doctor will be on hand from 10:00 A M with appointments until 4:30 P M The office opened Tuesday January 7 Dr Breiner the attending physician said equipment will be completed over the ensuing weeks
Robert G. Anderson born January 4 1898 in Belle Plaine Iowa lived in Belle Plaine most of his life except years in Okla and Thailand. He married Kathryn Kent in 1924 and she died in 1960. He later married Edith Nelson in 1963 and survived by Edith two sons two daughters a foster daughter four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held December 14 at McAninch Funeral Home Victor Iowa with Rev H B Fay officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery Belle Plaine.
Mr and Mrs Richard Alfred of Lincoln announce the birth of a son named Robert Dale on December 26 weighing 5 pounds 13 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Stanford Ang. Mr and Mrs R J Murray of Naperville announce the birth of Jason Thomas Patrick on December 21. Mrs Murray is the former Nancy Norquest.
Mr and Mrs A J Peterson of Beaver Crossing celebrate their Golden Anniversary with an open house at Beaver Crossing Grange Hall on Sunday January 12 from 2 to 4 30 PM. Hosts are their children Byron Bouels Gladys Bob Peterson and Gerald Peterson with families.
The Jolly Westside Birthday Club met January 7 at Mrs Jof Ostberg’s home. Ten members and three visitors attended. Celebrations honored Mrs Glen Babcock and Mrs Em ory Cramer. Bingo provided entertainment during the social hour. A pot luck lunch followed.
A light humorous column on holiday indulgence and post feast fitness. It jokes about kids joining in exercise, awkward home workouts, and the variety of weight loss myths. The narrator recalls a failed wall bump method and ends with a tongue in cheek tomato juice plus beer diet quip.
