Plains Rifle Highlights Hawken Design and Westward Use
The Nebraska State Historical Society Museum showcases a 48 inch Hawken plains rifle built in St Louis and used by trappers and explorers. The heavy stock and shortened barrel suited horses and long-range black powder loads, reflecting Plains conditions between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains. Samuel Hawken moved to St Louis in 1822 with his brother Jake and supplied both the Rocky Mountain Fur Company and Missouri Fur Company.
