Relief Bill Passed For 250 Million Emergency Aid

The House approved the emergency relief appropriation by 352 to 23 with minimal changes. Only one amendment barred relief to aliens temporarily in the country. The Works Progress Administration will administer the new funds, keeping about 2,000,000 people on relief rolls through June 30.

Senate approves bill to wipe off REC debts to treasury

The Senate passed a House bill canceling more than 2.5 billion dollars in Reconstruction Finance Corporation debts to the Treasury. Senator Byrd of Virginia calls it a return to honest bookkeeping, noting REC funds came from the Treasury and its assets show about 2.4 to 4.5 billion in advances for relief and expenditures across agencies.

Jones Urges Tax Revision Action on undistributed profits tax

ESSE JONES, chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corp, conferred with treasury officials and urged swift congressional action on tax revision. He told Undersecretary Roswell Magill that the nation awaits modification of the undistributed profits and capital gains taxes and that the bill in Ways and Means may be stalled by opposition to preserving a stiff tax on undistributed profits of closely held corporations.

Japanese push in central China threatens Kai feng and Lunghai corridor

Reports describe a major battle as Japanese forces smash a 15,000 strong Chinese army at the Yellow river crossing. Five Japanese armies advance through central China while three push from the Hwai river. Chiang Kai-shek fields about 400,000 troops to halt the invasion.
