The Polk Commercial Club unveiled its new slogan Mix Together Stick Together Cooperate at the Monday meeting. Floyd Waak of Polk High School submitted the winning line earning a five dollar prize donated to the high school silverware fund.
Ed Benson, a farmer north of town, was struck by a car driven by Joe Fjell on Saturday evening and was taken to Grand Island for observation. He was unconscious briefly but released after doctors found no serious injuries and returned home on Sunday.
Worship services listed for Swede Plains and Lutheran churches with Holy Communion in German and English. Lutheran Hour broadcast at 3:30 PM on KFAB Lincoln. Mission Church offers Sunday School at 10 and midweek service at 7:30 PM. Visitors welcome.
The Free Methodist Church announces Sunday School at 10 a.m. and sermons at 11 a.m. with evening services at 7:30 p.m. The Y P Service is at 6:45 p.m. A Sacred Cantata is planned for Easter Sunday as part of Lent season worship. Everyone is invited to attend.

Polktigh school ii enter a squad of speakers in the Hastings College invitational for an forensic tournament held on the college campus in Hastings Febr 24 and 26. The event attracts more than 200 speakers and actors from 25 central Nebraska high schools. Hastings College sponsors the forensic and dramatics departments. The outstanding debater will receive a $50 scholarship to Hastings College for two years and the outstanding actor a $50 scholarship for one year. Trophies will be awarded to the championship debate team and the winning school in the one act play contest.
Polk Swedes beat Hordville 86 to 16 with Don Peterson scoring 39 points and Cowgill, M. Peterson, and Allison each adding 14. Polk's passing clicked from the start as the easy victory was built. Central College visit scheduled for February 27 in what promises to be an exciting town game.
Rena, Dick and Francis John son of near Clarks were Wednesday evening callers in the Ed Coover home. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Watts of Osceola were Sunday dinner guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Steele.
About 90 people attended a Wednesday gathering at the Osceola Legion hall for the Polk County National Farm Loan association annual meeting. W. J. Stead of David City led arrangements, C. N. Jacobsen was reelected director, and talks covered forestry, FSA, and credit plans.
Judge Harry D. Landis invokes English common law to discharge a jury after one member disappears. As the jurors drop to eleven, the court declares a mistrial and excuses the remaining eleven, per the York Republican report.
Orville Jones Osceola wins Union Pacific Scholarship to University of Nebraska for next year. Betty Leigh McMeekin Shelby earns Nebraska Wesleyan Scholarship. Marjorie Glasser Polk named alternate Hastings College Scholarship. McMeekin also wins 44H member’s conservation camp trip. James McMeekin leads as club leader on trip. Arthur Deeter Osceola wins Burlington leadership trip to club week at Agricultural College. Maurine Schmoker wins swine club trip. Vance Bard Osceola wins Cudahy Packing sheep club trip. Fred Minder announces two State Club Week journalism registrations for top 44H work.
Miss Lillie Lind of Polk has been reelected to teach in the Shelby schools for the coming year with a raise in salary.
Former Polk residents living in California send letters affirming their enjoyment of the Polk Progress. Anna Johnson of Piedmont encloses a money order for a year and hopes Polkiters attend the 1939 Treasure Island Exposition. O Ostlund of Garden View Ave notes a 73rd birthday and sends regards to Polk friends.
More than two hundred farmers and friends attended Scotts Hall for the annual Farmers Fun Feed. The Valentine decorated room featured streamers hearts and balloons. The event showcased community singing and a covered dish luncheon with each family bringing a dish.
Polk Swedes defeated Osceola Townies 35 to 24 in a tight game with a 13 13 halftime tie and a 21 20 edge after three. Don Peterson led Polk with 18 points while Herrman had 10 for Osceola.
The Stull Corner Baby Beef Club met with Raymond Schott on February 3. Three new members joined. Leader gave a lesson and Mr. Peterson spoke on feeding. Mrs. Schott served lunch. Next meeting with Duane Schmoker on March 3 will organize a Sow and Litter Club.
Polk defeated Benedict 19 to 13 at home on Friday February 10. Stanley Peterson led Polk with 9 points, Willits added 6, and Smith 4. Benedict was paced by Wismer and Wright. Polk’s starting lineup included Peterson and Willits as forwards, Smith at center, and Upton and Davis as guards.
Jeanelle Kroger hosted a Valentine party Monday afternoon at her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kroger home. Guests included Junior Herbes Shirley Jane Ferguson Bob Eno Sheralee Sondra Hill Vance Sundberg MariBelle Lyle Rogene Welson Walden Billie McNaught and Katherine Nelson. The Valentine motif appeared in decorations and games were played. A two course luncheon followed at the seated tables.
Mrs Wallace Sandell and Miss Goldie Fossburg hosted a miscellaneous shower for Mrs Donald Upton on Wednesday afternoon February 8 at the Sandell home. Thirty relatives and friends attended and enjoyed pink and white decorations, games, and refreshments. Mrs Upton received many useful gifts for her new home.
The children of Mr and Mrs Henry Smith hosted a Sunday gathering to mark their parents 43rd wedding anniversary and the 15th anniversary of Mr and Mrs Martin Smith. Attendees included the Rhodes Dose families from Hampton Collett of Bradshaw Wahlbright of York and the Ziegelbein and Smith families. Cake and ice cream were served.
The Auxiliary gathered Monday afternoon February 23 with Mrs F W Davis as hostess and Mrs E E Pengelly assisting. Mrs C R Peterson presided, business followed by singing. Members shared Lincoln facts and Mrs Oscar Sundberg spoke on National Defense. A two course lunch for 16 members closed the meeting.
Polk High lost 33 to 13 at home to Osceola in the season closer on February 10. The pace favored Osceola late as Polk led early then the visitors pulled away. The county tournament is set for February 15 and 17 at Stromsburg with pairings Polk versus Stromsburg and Osceola versus Shelby.
Polk fire department responded Friday noon to High Prairie High School where an old chair near the furnace ignited. Damage was limited to smoke staining and was estimated at about $60.
Forty plates were served at Schultz Cafe for the Polk Commercial Club meeting. County Commissioners guests spoke briefly along with County Clerk John I. Anderson. Rev E E Pengelly Albert Sundberg and Floyd Waak spoke on the slogan contest and Boy Scouts. Arnold Isaacson presented a half hour moving picture show of local views.
Garden schools led by Howard Peterson agricultural agent and Walter Berck farm security supervisor will teach tomato varieties and other garden plants, site rotations and tips. Meetings are Monday February 20 Ball Schoolhouse, Wednesday February 22 Victor Schoolhouse, Thursday February 23 Court House, all at 8:00 p m.
Mrs. Hattie Matson, 56, died at her York home after a several week illness. Born in Osceola, she lived in Clarks before moving to York. Survived by three sons Glen Stromsburg Grant North Platte Mervin at home. daughter Pearl at home. sister Mrs. Lindblade Stromsburg. Funeral held Thursday with burial at Gwede Home Cemetery.
Relatives and friends joined Henry Mundt at his home Friday evening to celebrate his birthday anniversary. Attendees included Emil and Otto Wilshusen families, Frank Scheapler, Irvin Light and family, John Light, Herbert Mundt and family, Martin Baack and family, and Hillard Maderow. Social games preceded refreshments provided by guests.

Immediately after a second caucus will be held for candidates to the Village of Polk Board of Trustees for a two year term.
