WCTU Meeting Highlights Francis Willard Life

The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union met with Mrs. Paul Lemke last Tuesday with Mrs. Emma Mayo assisting host, Mrs. A. C. Bates as program leader. The topic was Francis Willard’s Life and a book review of The Uncrowned Queen was given.

IOOF and Rebekahs Bid Farewell to Burkes

Local IOOF and Rebekah Lodges hosted a farewell party at the Lodge Hall for Mr. and Mrs. George Burke. The couple, moving to a new home near Central City, received a table lamp as a keepsake. Forty guests enjoyed cards bingo and a pot luck lunch.

Corn Loans Through AAA Expanded and Details Given

The AAA reports 608 corn loans completed and 45 purchase agreements to date with strong interest as prices drop. A $1.35 support price runs to June 30, 1949, for corn grade No. 3 or better with moisture limits. Loans mature by Sept 1, 1949. 3 percent interest plus 1 cent per bushel sealing fee. Purchase agreements require delivery after Sept 1, 1949 with a 4 cent per bushel fee and no upfront funds. Further details at local AAA office.

Family visits mark a quiet weekend

DeVerne Lindholm spent Friday with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Con Lindholm. Mr and Mrs M G Lindburg returned home last Friday from a five week trip in the East. Mr Fllen Tinker visited Mrs Cartie Smith Sunday. Mr and Mrs F W Davis were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs W M Willert.

Blue Ribbon 4-H Livestock Club organized in Polk County

The Blue Ribbon 4-H Livestock Club was formed February 9 at the Extension Office with Dick Miller Osceola as President Lynn Sundberg Stromsburg as Vice President Franklin Peterson Stromsburg as Secretary Robert Lamoree Osceola as News Reporter Louis Whitmore Shelby as member and Douglas Peterson Stromsburg as associate. Bob Lamb Osceola named club leader. sow and litter projects planned for 1949. First foraying dates set March 1–8. March 2 meeting at Howard Sundberg home with Lynn Sundberg hosting and showcasing Berkshire gifts.

Loans Open to Nebraska Farmers in State Storm Area

The Farmers Home Administration has made additional loan funds available in Nebraska. The entire state is declared an Emergency Area by the state director, with loans for farmers who suffered losses from severe storms and cannot obtain adequate local bank assistance.

Willing Child Forges Weekend Trek To Church

Marilyn Hahn aged 12 did not miss Sunday School for five years. Snow blocked roads on Saturday. She drove a tractor three miles to the Methodist Church with Lewie Mach. The report also notes visits and dinners among local families including the Lindholms, Linquists, Bushes and Johnsons with Marilyn and Mrs. Mable Benjamin referenced.

Osceola to Host District C Basketball Tournament

Osceola will be the host town for the Class C district basketball tournament to be staged March 15. Superintendent Hansen will manage the event with 12 teams entered from Belgrade Cedar Rapids Clarkson Genoa St Francis Humphrey Leigh Newman Grove North Loup Osceola St Edward Shelby and Stromsburg. Chamber of Commerce members assist with tickets and door duties.

Shelby Repeats as County Basketball Champions

Shelby High School repeated as county champions by defeating Polk 53 35 in the final after earlier routs. Fasbender led Shelby with 20 points in the title game while Stromsburg and Osceola reserves split wins on the prior day, Ed Watts scoring 10 in the final. Attendance reached 1738 over two nights.

Fortieth Wedding Anniversary Celebrated at York Home

Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Wilshusen of York hosted a February 13 open house for family, neighbors, and friends celebrating 40 years of marriage. Over 100 guests attended. a program featured songs, recitations, a life history, and a large three tier wedding cake.
