Weather Instrument Lands on Harless Farm

Leland Harless reported a weather instrument landed on his farm Saturday. The red object resembled a radio with an aerial and a parachute attached to a balloon. It had been released at Kearney earlier, floated down at four o clock, recorded temperature and moisture, and asked the finder to mail it to an out of state address.

Numerous local families share visits and meals across town

Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Cramer and family and others hosted and attended dinners and gatherings through the week. Guests came from Lincoln, York, Gresham, and Aurora, with several birthday and anniversary observances noted. Local residents, including the Bedients, Cramers, Paynes, and Merchants, hosted or visited in homes from Bradshaw to Stromsburg and Hardville.

York Couple Celebrates 40th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Carl A Wilshusen of York celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house next Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. The note lists several local visits and family events including a Feb 5 baby birth at Stromsburg hospital and various Sunday gatherings in Stromsburg and nearby homes.

Leaders Train 4-H Club Leaders in Lincoln Visit

Two 4-H Club leaders Mrs Rolland Swanson of Stromsburg and Mrs Harry McCauley of Silver Creek attended Lincoln meetings January 27 28. Sessions covered homemaking foods and general topics culminating in a banquet and a Theatre Car program by Union Pacific with films and discussions for about 100 viewers.

Polk County Soil Conservation Supervisors to Be Elected

Polk County landowners will vote in March to elect two four year supervisors for the Soil Conservation District. Incumbents George Bond and Leo Kresha have served as dedicated public volunteers, with Bruce Anderson Ray Brigham and Gordon Fredrickson as current board members. Petitions require 25 landowner signatures and must be returned by February 16 to the extension or district offices.

1949 AAA Soil Conservation Program Similar to 1948 Plan

The Agricultural Conservation Program outlines a 1949 soil conservation effort similar to 1948 with expanded practices and greater possible financial aid. Polk County signups are planned for late February, weather and road conditions permitting. Farmers should attend meetings to enroll and start conservation actions.

March of Dimes Quota Falls Short in Osceola Drive

County quota of 3500 dollars is falling short due to weather hampering campaign efforts. Contributions can be turned in to local campaign director or Carleton Anderson treasurer in Osceola. Credit will be given to the local district for donations received. Nebraska reports new cases in 1949.

Farm group salutes volunteers at community meeting

A speaker praised the young farmers gathered, saying they were a swell group and that holding such meetings makes participants feel they are doing a little good. The remark closes with the lighthearted line Nuf Sed Fellows.

Members of the Ladies of the Mission Church met in the church parlors and elected officers for the term. Mrs. Clarence Bodine became president with Mrs. M. E. Olson as vice president, Mrs. Rudolph Nyberg as secretary, and Mrs. Leland Harless as treasurer.

Patronage dividends to members of the Polk Farmers Produce Company will be withheld this year following a vote at the annual meeting last week. Officers said plans are under way to purchase a truck for picking up cream poultry and eggs. Later items note visits and gatherings among local residents on various dates.

WSCS Meeting Held at Methodist Church Parlors

The WSCS of the Methodist Church met at the church parlors last Thursday afternoon with program leaders Mrs. Rolland Dahlin and Mrs. Earl Stevens as hostesses. A patriotic theme was carried out in the lunch hosted by Mrs. S. J. Harless, Mrs. Will Kroger, Mrs. Lloyd Stromberg and Mrs. Neil McNaught.
