Slow turnout for Polk postmaster applications deadline

Applications for the Polk postmaster position close Tuesday February 16 as the Civil Service Commission reports insufficient candidate numbers. The exam uses new standards agreed by the Post Office Department and Civil Service Commission, with forms available at the local post office and in Washington for filing by the deadline.

Cubs Fall In Tight Home Court Showdown With St Paul

Polk team led most of the game before St Paul captured a 39 38 finish in a tense Tuesday matchup. Jerry King led Polk scoring in the early scrap while Polk managed only three field goals in the second half, as St Paul heated up to snatch the win.

Burg Wins Both Titles in County Basketball Tourney

Stromsburg captured both county tournament titles at Osceola last week. The Burg second team beat Polk 48 to 38 in the final, while Burg’s first team won 61 to 50 over Polk.

Ernest Olson, 76, former resident, died January 31 in North Battleford Saskatchewan Canada. Funeral services were Feb 6 at Edwin Anderson Funeral Home Stromsburg with Rev Carlson officiating. Burial in Swede Plain Cemetery. Survived by sons Floyd of Chappel Nebraska and Oscar of Ramona South Dakota. brother Carl of Long Beach California.

Polk Woman's Club Draws 160 For February Meeting

About 160 members and visitors attended the Polk Woman's Club meeting in Community Hall. Martha Logan a Home Economist from Swift & Co spoke. A short business session led by President Jo Strand approved donations to polio, the Penny Art Fund, Music Fund and Nurse's Gift Scholarship. Plans were set to buy a History of Federated Woman's Clubs book.
