Polk County BB Tournament Set For February 10 and 11

The Polk County high school basketball tournament starts February 10 at 4 00 PM in Osceola. First day pairings place Shelby and Stromsburg second teams at 4 00 PM then Osceola and Polk second teams at 5 30 PM followed by Shelby and Stromsburg first teams at 7 00 PM and Osceola versus Polk first teams at 8 30 PM. The Friday finals feature the second team winners at 7 00 PM and the first team title game at 8 30 PM. Shelby edged Polk High to win last year’s tournament.

Polk County High In Savings Bonds Sales

E C Nordlund chair Polk County Savings Bond Committee reports Polk County's 1948 savings bond figures. Polk ranks eleventh per capita and eleventh by maturities redemptions with 419 percent. County residents bought Series E F and G bonds totaling 1 076 036 dollars, about 400 000 less than 1947 and 270 900 more than 1946.

The WSCS of Swede Plain Church will meet Wednesday afternoon February 9 in the church parlor. Hostesses are Mrs Lloyd Widga and Mrs Willard Adelson with Mrs Multon Anderson as program leader. Leo Wurtz is driving a new Chevrolet truck.

Polk Cubs Rally Past Stromsburg Vikings

Polk wins its second this season over Stromsburg as Roger Long nets six free throws and 12 points, while Paul Lamoree leads Stromsburg with 12. The game ends rough with 21 Stromsburg fouls to 13 Polk fouls and a late free-throw surge seals the victory. The St Edwards game was moved from January 28 to February 21.

Special Taxpayer Help Sessions Planned for 1948 Returns

Special notice informs taxpayers to file current 1948 income returns. A deputy will assist February 15 to March 15, 1949 at York City Auditorium, Columbus Post Office Building, Albion Court House, and other Columbus and York locations. Assistance is free.

Farmers Produce Meeting Sees Board Election at Odd Fellow Hall

The Farmers Produce shareholders held their annual meeting on Wednesday January 26 with Otto Wilshusen presiding. Milford Johnson was elected to the board replacing Roy Glasser. Other directors named include Otto Wilshusen Roy Sundberg Robert Stahl and Ilof Ostberg. James Norgard of Superior Nebraska spoke on cream and produce quality. An oyster supper for 60 followed the business sessions.

Polk County Extension News Highlights 1948 49 Activities

At the 1948 Annual Extension Meeting in Swanson's Hall Stromsburg directors were elected for three years. Dairy Breeders named Arthur Deeter and Harlon S. Johnson for three year terms with Deeter elected President for 1949. Noxious Weed meeting saw Maritz Swanson chosen to represent the Northeast District. A planning meeting in York focused on an Extension Irrigation program for several counties. The 4-H Timely Topic Speaking Contest at Stromsburg High School saw Sondra Hill win first place and earn a district contest berth.

Clarks Youth Dies After East of Town Auto Crash

Bob Dittmer eighteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Otto Dittmer died when his Wurtz Chevrolet collided head on with a Rapid Film Service truck three miles east of Clarks on U S 30 last Thursday morning. H L Wurtz suffered a gash and Jim Jacobi was uninjured. Dittmer died en route to York hospital and H L Wurtz is son of Will Wurtz of Clarks.

Camp Fire Girls extend March of Dimes drive to February 15 and begin door to door canvassing. A regular meeting at Mary Lou Sandell's home, two guests, and a Valentine gift draw marked the evening. Other items include Polk County 4-H Timely Topic Contest planning and a postponed County Womans Council Installation Tea due to icy roads.

State Paralysis Repeats After Weekend Snowstorm

Nebraska endures renewed isolation as up to twelve inches of snow and high winds cripple roads and railways. Western and northern counties report drifts to fifteen feet, delaying plowing and postal service. Livestock losses mount while residents, stranded for weeks, face fuel shortages and property damage. Robert Mills Named Polk County Fair Secretary

Osceola attorney Robert Mills has accepted the post of secretary for the Polk County Fair Board. Paul Monson was re elected president as the board listed its officers and members. The pair attended a Lincoln meeting where fair officials from across the state shared ideas and booked Hale's Shows of Tomorrow for this year’s midway. The 1949 fair is set for August 23 to 25.
