Mrs Arnold Neuhaus spent last Wednesday at Clarkson with her parents Mr and Mrs Joseph V Urban. Mr and Mrs Paul Ruch of Haxton Colorado were weekend guests in the Don Osberg home enroute home from Chicago Illinois where they had visited their daughter.
Polk Cub girls fall 41-27 to Cedar Rapids in the Goldenrod Conference Tournament final at Clarks. Polk struggled early with 7 points at halftime but out-scored Cedar Rapids 20-17 after the break. Denise Sterns and Deb Bankson led Polk with 8 points each. Kathy Kayton scored 22 for Cedar Rapids.
The Nebraska School for the Deaf in Omaha needs Campbell’s Labels for Education to obtain classroom gear. Labels can be dropped at Linsay Darnell’s barber shop or home or at the Progress office for forwarding through March 12.
Mr and Mrs Alan Merchant welcomed a baby boy named Benjamin Ryan on January 29 at York General Hospital. The newborn weighed 9 pounds 9 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Floyd Merchant and Mr and Mrs Karl Schwarz of Colorado.
Luann Bills was honored at a miscellaneous shower in the Trinity Lutheran Church basement on Sunday afternoon January 30. She opened gifts after games and a green and white color theme. Hostesses were aunts and cousins of the bride to be.
Mrs Melvin Bender returned to her home from York hospital on Saturday. Mr Tony Warnick and Mrs Warnick delivered a dinner to their home on Sunday. Arnon Dover moved from Lincoln hospital to the LTC Center of Central City hospital. Mrs Orpha Due is a patient in York hospital. Mrs Walter Nelson returned home from Central City hospital after a week of treatments.
Community Chorus begins practice on February 16 at 8 45 p m under Miss Lynn Fletcher. Open to all who enjoy singing and may wish to join for the Palm Sunday concert.
Jim Simdorn, an assistant cashier at Citizens State Bank, resigns at month end and has not shared future plans with the Progress. The Polk home of Simdorn is up for sale.
TOPS held a meeting January 31 at the fire hall with five new members joining. Eleven members combined lost 31 pounds while the weekly queen shed 10 pounds. An installation of officers occurred and the group scheduled a February 7 meeting at 9:00 AM inviting new members.
Leanne Lind daughter of Mr and Mrs Wallace Lind won the 10 11 age division at the Elks National Hoop Shoot state meet in Kearney on Saturday January 29 with 17 of 25 free throws She previously won the York area contest by sinking 16 of 25 tosses She returns to Kearney February 12 to face regional winners from North and South Dakota Wyoming Colorado Kansas Teams across ages 8 9 10 11 12 13 compete for a national title in Kansas City Polk backs Leanne for regional and national glory.
Polk basketeers earned a top ten ranking after a four overtime loss to Fullerton in the Goldenrod conference finals and a 54 48 Saturday win over Stromsburg. Four Polk players reached double figures Vernon Tallman 15 Tom Carlstrom 14 Mark Clymer 11 Dave Shenk 10 with Hudson and Bill Carlstrom adding two each. The Cubs host Osceola Friday and Hardville Saturday.
Mrs Morris Fisher Cheryl and Mrs Paul Strand attended the March of Dimes Tea at the Executive Mansion in Lincoln. The Polk Woman's Club received a citation for 25 years of devoted service to the National Foundation March of Dimes. Cheryl Fisher Jo Strand and Joan Fisher received yellow carnations for their roles.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a Heart Fund drive in Polk. Envelopes are in neighborhoods and heart banks are in local businesses to encourage generosity and support for the program.

Berniece Austin retired Noble Grand. Installation conducted by Wilda Holmes and staff.
Mr and Mrs Henry Blase were Monday afternoon visitors and lunch guests of Mr and Mrs Murray. Nelson and Mr and Mrs Levar Sandell visited at Cozad Sunday with Mr and Mrs Glen Rose.
