Polk Cubs and David City Clash in Rough Week

Polk Cubs lost two games in a rough slate at Gresham on December 14 with a 33 to 17 defeat and a 29 to 26 setback to David City. Burdette Flodman led Polk with 11 points while D Haber man scored 12 for David City.

Faithful Workers Club meets at Harold Miller home

The Faithful Workers Club gathered Tuesday December 14 with 14 members and two visitors. Mrs. Earl Stevens and Mrs. Cleo Cramer led the program committee while lunches were served by Mrs. Martin Hoffman Jr. and Mrs. Harold Cramer. Numerous community visits and a Christmas cantata at Arborville Church are noted along with family dinners and church events in the area.

Sunday December 12 1948 at United Brethren Church Monroe Nebraska Verna Lee Farmer married Max Lee Nelson of Clark s in a candle light double ring ceremony Rev Benjamin Hillier officiated evergreen backdrop guests included relatives neighbors and friends a reception followed in church parlors for 125 attendees after a short wedding trip the couple will reside in Clark s several out of town guests attended including the Adelsons Moyrbergs Wyman and Kuhn among others the bride wore a blue suit and matching hat the groom a belt bag set with coordinating hat the best man was William Kuhn.

Trail of crime ends here with trailer theft

Robert Maltbe aged 25 of Illinois and his 19 year old wife from Indiana plus their 4 month old baby were arrested after a chain of thefts across the middle west. Maltbe was sentenced to two years and nine months by Judge Landis in Osceola for stealing a trailer in Stromsburg on December 9 and a Buick in Osceola. The couple admitted fleeing toward Illinois but returned after Mrs Maltbe urged surrender. FBI warnings noted Maltbe was dangerous and facing federal charges from Montana theft and an army AWOL status was mentioned. Sheriff Peterson delivered maltbe to Lincoln after sentencing.

Polk High School Kews Christmas Seal Drive Summary

Polk grade children completed the Christmas Seal sales on December 20 and sent 48.45 to Miss McBeth County Superintendent. Rooms reported per grade totals with a remaining balance of 21.83 from last year to be given to Miss McBeth for a mobile unit in Polk County. Christmas vacation begins Wednesday afternoon. school resumes Monday January 3, 1949. WCTU sponsors film showings on January 4 and 11 titled Help Wanted.

Mr and Mrs George Malek and daughter Elaine of Osceola and Robert Zieg of York were dinner guests of Mrs Arthur Hultaurst an daughters and Mr and Mrs Ernest Johnson. Mrs Ernest Ericson, recently ill at Bryan Memorial hospital in Lincoln, returned home. Mrs Mary Ferrell of Denver visits daughter Mrs Ansel Fredrickson and family and son Sherman Ferrell and family. Mr and Mrs Russell Anderson and Miss Jewel Morgan attended the Central Electric & Gas Company Christmas party in Columbus. Edna Olson returns from Riverside California and will stay two weeks with her parents. Sterling Anderson, Camp Stoneman California, will spend furlough with his mother. Mr and Mrs Allen Lounsburry Mr and Mrs Fred Stoki with Irene and Gerald and Wm Nelson attend the wedding of Anita Holtman and Earl Nelson in Fremont. Earl Nelson is son of Wm Nelson of Stromsburg. Miss Annette Eckblade, teaching at Tulare California, is mentioned.

Fifth generation speaks piece at church

A four year old Linda Kay Gustafson spoke her piece at the Methodist church Christmas program as a member of the Stevens family fifth generation to take part. Her father is Roger Gustafson and her grandmother is Beulah Stevens. The Stevens and Gustafson families attend the church. Several relatives gathered for Christmas visits and birthday celebrations at family homes in the area, including Mr and Mrs. Paul Stevens and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Branting. A number of others from the community planned Christmas travel and holiday visits.
