The Weede Plains Church schedules a sermon at 10:00 and Sunday School at 11:00 with a Christmas program on Christmas morning. The Quarterly Conference is set for December 29 at 2:30 PM. Pastor Juletta announces 6 am service and no Sunday School on Christmas Day. A Sunday School rehearsal is set for December 26 at 1 30 pm and the program on December 27 at 7 pm. The Stull Corner Beef Club in Osceola formed with members including Raymond Schott and Maurine Schmoker. Jay Hastings clarifies he has not endorsed any proposition canvassing Polk County.
Mr and Mrs Neil McNaught and sons left for Thayer Kansas to visit relatives. Hazel Stromberg of Los Angeles arrived to spend Christmas with her parents Oscar and family. Mr and Mrs Harley Brown announce the birth of a ten pound baby girl named Audrey Jean. Mr and Mrs Bunny Schmidt Floyd and Mr and Mrs Ellen Peterson Scottsbluff visit relatives here for the holidays.
About 75 business leaders farmers and professionals attended the December Commercial Club banquet at Viking Hall. Newton Gaines from the State University Extension spoke on cooperation among business and county agencies. Howard L. Peterson and N. E. McNeely were noted as attendees with brief remarks.
Christmas displays brighten Polk with many homes lit and decorated. A large illuminated tree stands before the Methodist Church with a window painting that glows at night. Main street businesses also light their windows, creating a festive downtown scene.
Judges touring the town Tuesday night named the top prize winners for Christmas displays. First place went to a Walther League display in a window, second to the Methodist Church, and third to the Paul Strand residence. Several homes and business windows received honorable mention with additional decorations noted around Polk.
On December 14 Polk grades traveled to Bradshaw and won 27 to 6. Twelve players joined the trip. Wayne Willits led with 12 points, Peterson had 6, Smith and Don Ostberg 4 each, Upton 1. Starting five were Willits and Peterson forwards, Upton and Davis guards, Smith center.
Miss Anna Blase daughter of Mr and Mrs Will Blase of Hampton married Gilbert Driewer son of Mr and Mrs Gust Driewer of Bradshaw at the Evangelical Lutheran Church near Polk on Sunday December 18. The ceremony at five o'clock featured a double ring rite with Rev C F Juergensen officiating and ushers lighting tapers as guests arrived. The bridal party included cousins Miss Wilma Zierott and Miss Ruth Richert as bridesmaids and Miss Margaret Martens as maid of honor. The bride wore white wedding ring satin with chantilly lace and orange blossoms, a long veil, white satin slippers, and carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums and white snapdragons. The reception followed at the bride’s parents home for about 135 guests with a three‑course dinner and a large three‑tier cake. The couple planned to live on a farm northeast of Hampton.

The Polk High School Music and Dramatic Departments under Robert Strickland and Miss Dorothy Pearson staged a Shelby convocation on Wednesday afternoon December 14. The program featured two string ensemble numbers a soprano solo O Holy Night by Doris McCoy a trumpet solo Song to the Evening Star by Peggy McGinnis a soprano alto duet Lovely Night a reading by Welcome Willits two violin solos by Dorothy Whitacre and alto solos by Irene Whitacre concluding with further string ensemble performances.
El ton Berck of Osceola heads by election as president of the Polk County Farmers Education and Co-Operative association at Swede Home. M. G Lindburg Polk is vice president Wendall Swanson Stromsburg is secretary-treasurer. A tax exemption resolution for gasoline used in farm machinery was rejected. About 350 Polk County families belong to the association which runs a gas and oil department.
Pork stores will stay open Wednesday through Friday nights this week and close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. They will reopen and remain open until 10 p.m. Monday, December 26, then close for the remainder of the period.
On Friday December 16 Polk Swedes lost 18 to 13 at Henderson. Sandell led the Swedes with 4 points while Kleppinstein scored 10 for Henderson. Upcoming Swedes schedule lists games from January 4 at Palmer to February 28 at Hordville with multiple road trips and home dates.
A Polk High School debate examined whether studying American history free of bias builds better citizens. Proponents Duane Nyberg and Hazel Johnson argued affirmatively, while Dorothy Rhode and Reuben Meline spoke for the negative. Harold Wilcox conducted a follow up survey of student reactions.
G Brauer offers a limited supply of 1939 religious calendars as Christmas gifts. Interested readers may visit his residence in the next few days to obtain one, with only a small number available due to high cost.
Agriculture agent How ard Peterson announced a cooperative livestock purchasing organization for county youth aged 10 to 20. Calves, pigs or sheep may be bought via the program, funded by Farm Security with extension service. Each participant signs a note and loan with a parent. Apply at the agricultural agent's office before January 1. Also notes a Methodist Church Ladies Aid meeting held December 15 with hostesses and a candlelight service attended by about 60.
Henderson defeated Polk in both first and second teams on Friday December 16. The first team fell 42 to 14 to a strong Henderson quintet while the second team suffered a low scoring 2 to 0 defeat. Polk’s next home game is January 6 against Silver Creek.
Mr and Mrs E P Moderow and family visited in the home of Mr and Mrs Ben Moderow at Aurora Sunday evening.
The trial of the will of the late Charles Peterson of Stromsburg was paused by mutual agreement and reset to January 3 at 10 am in Osceola district court. The case draws county-wide attention for its size of bequests and prominent parties, with witnesses including a Bailey sanatorium staff member and a handwriting expert.
