The Methodist Church schedules Sunday School at 10, worship at 11, and an evening service at 7 30. A Christmas program with a children led service opens at 7 30 next Tuesday followed by a cantata titled The Shepherds Staff. A discussion on How The Bible Came To Be continues this Sunday morning. Quarterly Conference set for December 29.
A church announces a Sunday School at 10 o'clock and a midweek service on Wednesday evening at 7 thirty.
The First Baptist Church led by Rev. R. M. Bailey schedules Sunday School at 10:00, morning worship at 11:00, BYPU at 7:15, and evening services at 8:00 with a Christmas cantata The Holy Advent. The choir fund is funded by an offering. A Sunday School Christmas program is set for December 22 at 7:30 and a Wise Men theme is noted in worship. Rev. C A Forman will be absent.

A Polk county case reveals a flaw in state law on vehicle permits. A dealer paid ten dollars for a tow permit. three copies go to different departments and 1 89.95 goes to the state treasurer with five cents kept locally. The county is seven cents short per transaction after accounting for envelopes and supplies.
A visit to Polk’s stores shows convenient local shopping with new gift items. Davis Pharmacy offers popular priced toys and gifts while Home Service Store and Sundberg & Son Hardware display many options for family members. Farmer’s Store closes out dry goods aiding Christmas purchases in Polk.
N E McNeely, longtime Union Pacific depot agent in Polk, is transferred to Fullerton to fill a similar telegraph role. His brother Robert will move from Loma Nebr to Fullerton as agent. The McNeelys plan to relocate by January 1. McNeely joined UP in 1909 and has served at multiple points, earning a substantial raise with the promotion.
A choir of forty voices will present a sacred Christmas Cantata at the Baptist Church Sunday at 7 30 p m. Wilbur Whitacre directs the choir and Mrs Ralph Anscheutz presides at the organ. Everyone is invited to attend.
Polk retail stores will stay open Wednesday Thursday and Friday nights as usual. They will close at 6 oclock on Christmas Eve Saturday December 24th.
A sale calendar lists events including J Brown's Milking Shorthorns sale on Saturday December 17 and farm sales by W H Bert Smith and Harry Huddleston on Monday December 19.
Mr and Mrs O W Gustaffur visited on Sunday in the home of Mr and Mrs Virgil Peer at Hordville.
The Polk Commercial Club sponsors a December calendar of events at the Polk Theater. On Saturday December 17 Santa Claus Day offers free treats for all children. Saturday December 24 features a Living Xmas Tree by 21 local girls. All programs run at 2 30 sharp with free admission. Plan to attend.
Commercial Club president Carl Steelquist announced a telegram from Santa Claus confirming a Polk visit this Saturday afternoon December 17. Santa will arrive about three o clock and distribute candy and nuts to children. headquarters are planned at the Viking Hall for comfort if the day is cold.
The Farm Security Administration and extension service sponsor a lecture series led by Walter Berck and Howard Peterson on sorghums and hybrid corn. The first meetings start Monday at 8 pm with sessions December 19 at the Courthouse, December 20 at Ball School, December 21 at Victor School, and December 22 at High Prairie. Both men and women may attend night-school style sessions and county sorghum test results will be released. a moving picture reel on sorghum varieties will be shown.
Mrs LeRoy Johnson, a recent bride, was celebrated at a miscellaneous shower hosted by Mesdames Fred Johnson Oliver Johnson Elwyn Johnson and Donald Johnson at the Elwyn Johnson home. Blue and silver decor complemented games and gifts carried by the bride’s young attendants Darlene and Demaris Johnson. Twenty six guests attended including Mrs Lloyd Hahn Stromsburg Mrs Leonard Daddow Loup City Miss Jessie McFadden Loup City and Miss Fern Johnson Central City.

Stromsburg residents and guests attended events in Omaha Osceola David City and Pierre over the past week. The Midwest Implement Dealers convention in Omaha drew H B Branting and Leo Wurtz with others joining Christmas travel plans and family visits across Nebraska and South Dakota.
Mrs WEE Johnson enjoyed a birthday anniversary gathering Sunday at her Polk area farm home. Neighbors and friends attended including Minnie Nicholson H A Shostrom and families Joe Granere Reg Price Ralph Peterson Wilmer Johnson and others. Refreshments followed the informal reunion.
Harold Brown sues Leonard Luft and Mabel Raeder of Osceola for 15000 damages over a September 11 1938 auto crash near Central City. Plaintiffs reside in Omaha.
Dr D H Westfall has rented the front room of the old town hall from the Village Board and will begin extensive painting and improvements before moving in around January 11. Upon completion he plans to install new office furniture and equipment for a new office.

Community members share visits and birthday gatherings with families in York Aurora Osceola and David City including Mrs. Flick Mrs. Ramsey Mr. Kaeding and others. Funeral attendance for Janice Wahl is noted with relatives traveling to York.
Two 4 H clubs organized with members listed and aims defined. The Money Saver’s Farm Account Club led by Frank Bard will study farm accounting with members named and records kept from January 1. The Tie Right Rope Club led by R L Smith will study knots splices and halter making with member list and an associate member.
Mrs Ira Glasser Gertrude and Harold Nelson visited Lincoln on Monday. Mr and Mrs H G Brausr and Mr and Mrs Henry Schultz called on Rev and Mrs Carl F Juergensen Sunday evening. Ira Glasser family visited Roy Glasser Sunday afternoon. Freeman Hahn of Haxtun Colorado dined with Albert Sundberg Saturday. Henry Sandell and Albert Sundberg with Doyle visited C Bodine at Hordville Sunday. Harry Hassel and wife welcomed a baby boy born Sunday December 11 at St Francis hospital. Mrs Hassel is Myrtle Jones, sister of Mrs W L Lindburg.
Polk High opened its 1938 39 basketball season with a 37 to 12 loss to Rising City. The junior team won 11 to 1. Polk travels to Henderson on Friday December 16. Team members include Maynard Schrader Everett Cramer Virgil Willits Lindburg Donald Hahn Floyd Peterson Dean McGinnis Hilton Steelquist and others.
The Polk Commercial Club announces prizes for the best and most attractive home decorations. Three prizes will go to residents judged by a committee, with displays complete by December 20. Businesses will be judged but eligible only for honorable mention.
In Osceola district court Elmer H. Feldt of Lincoln contests the will of Charles J. Peterson, who died two years ago leaving about 60 000 dollars. Feldt is the sole American heir. Sweden heirs receive cash bequests. Peterson left land, 120 acres in Polk County, and gifts to schools churches and the cemetery association at Stromsburg. Administrator is BE Nordlund of Stromsburg. Trial before Judge Landis began Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with a large legal team present.
Congressman elect Carl Curtis of Minden plans immediate travel to Washington, D. C. after Christmas to assume duties in the nation’s capital. He will spend Christmas Day with his ill mother in Minden and resign from many local activities to focus on his new role. Curtis chose Milton Cox, a longtime Arapahoe publisher, as his secretary and reporter to keep constituents informed.
Clarks High School hosted a convocation for Polk school attendees on December 12. The program featured choral and instrumental music, tap dancing, and a reading by the music and drama departments. The Polk Girl Reserves provided lunch for visitors.
