FFA Star Regional Farmers Named for 1950

Three Future Farmers of America members were named regional star farmers for 1950. Budd Ott of Bangor Pennsylvania heads the North Atlantic region with a 300 acre dairy farm and 70Holstein cattle. Rolland Turnow of Curtice Ohio operates two 812 acre farms near Toledo with sugar beets tomatoes and cukes. Paul Crawford of Moore Utah farms a large ranch with his father producing Hereford cattle range beef and some dairy cows.

Christmas Seal Idea Sparked by Danish Clerk in 1903

Danish postal clerk Einer Holboell conceived selling stickers on Christmas mail to fund tuberculosis work. The plan spread from Copenhagen to King Christian and Queen Louise, with four million seals sold in 1904. Miss Emily Bissell expanded the effort in the United States, raising $3000 to support a tuberculosis hospital and turning the campaign into a nationwide effort.

The first Christmas card was designed in 1842 by William Maw Egley a 16 year old London engraver apprentice He printed 100 copies for friends but faced ridicule and it failed commercially The card was forgotten until a 1941 find in the British Museum and Christmas cards later revived by a publisher in 1862
