County Extension News Annual Meet Held in Stromsburg

The county extension group met in Stromsburg on Wednesday evening with eighty members present. Lavelle Lamoree was named Director from the Southwest District for a three year term. The treasury stood at 913.75 in the membership fund. Extension work cited include 4116.00 in service on 156 farms and 662 new births, 385 second services, 211 third services, 204 extra services. Continuous breeding costs discussed with a 1948 service fee of 6.50 per new breeding and 1.00 per extra service. A periodical Sunday service is not offered, and Bangs disease testing urged as a key control measure. Discussions covered Brucellosis risks, free livestock testing, and the need for disease eradication, with emphasis on volume to reduce per-unit costs.

Polk Commercial Club backs free Christmas show

The Commercial Club of Polk met in the fire building for its regular meeting. It sponsors a free show next Saturday December 20 at the Polk Theatre with Santa giving candy to children after the 2:00 pm program. Members were urged to bring children to Polk and attend the next meeting for officer elections. The club also urged local businesses not normally open on holidays to close on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Patience rewarded after severe sleet storm and wide outages

The company reports a devastating sleet storm caused widespread damage, with ice up to inches on lines and thousands of wire breaks. Long distance connections were paralyzed and rural lines suffered most as ice lingered for days. Preliminary damage estimates reach $75,000 and service restoration continued amid extensive outages.

Ed Gillette Seeks Re election as State Treasurer

State Treasurer Edward Gillette filed for re election Thursday December 11. He was appointed in 1945 by Governor Griswold while with the army in the Solomon Islands and elected in 1946. A veteran of World War II he is a former county treasurer and state senator from Holdrege and is 52.

Open House Marks Polk Highs 25th Wedding Anniversary

The Polk community host open house as Ilos Ostberg and wife celebrate their silver wedding anniversary with 120 relatives and friends. Guests viewed rose themed attire, shared lunch, and gifts while the couple plans a California trip to visit relatives and a great grandchild.
