About 650 people packed Wilig Hall for the John Deere Centennial celebration hosted by P. T. Wurtz and Son. The program featured talking pictures led by The Blacksmith's Gift with Monte Blue portraying John Deere, plus farmer oriented reels and refreshments after the show.
Mr and Mrs P E Shostrom of Polk celebrate their golden wedding with a Sunday open house December 20 1936 from 2 00 to 5 00 PM Relatives and friends are invited to call during the afternoon to extend best wishes.
Chase Hastert and family narrowly escaped injury when a decorative Christmas tree suddenly caught fire after being lit. He removed the flaming tree to the yard and doused remaining flames from cotton batting and a rug, avoiding serious damage. Elmer Peterson traveled through Polk after a visit in Omaha for an oil men meeting.
A big surprise Santa Claus will visit Polk next Wednesday afternoon at 3 PM for a meet and greet with children and families. All residents are invited to attend the friendly event and share a festive moment with Santa.
Polk retail stores will remain open until 10 p.m. on the four nights before Christmas. The hours were adopted years ago by Polk merchants and announced by F. W. Davis, Chairman of the Commercial Club.
A new little theatre movement sponsored by the Commercial Club launches with the play For Pete's Sake. The cast features twelve local actors and is directed by Miss Beryl Smith who recently returned from directing tours in Minnesota and Iowa.
Pell County Conservation Association reports completion speed for the 1936 program and outlines the new 1937 plan after farmer meetings. The program will pay farmers who shift up to 15 percent of soil depleting bases to conserving uses and implement approved practices. About ten counties have received or will soon receive payments. Polk County works on forms for Lincoln. County committee rejects partial report plans to front early payments, says Agricultural Agent Kelly.
A shipment of Syroco wood carved gift ware arrives featuring book ends neck tie racks brush sets and ash trays in Scotty Elephant Faron Lyre designs. Prices range from 1.00 to 1.75. L A Erickson Stromsburg. Mr and Mrs Guy Shenk and Herschell Shenk of Clarks were dinner guests at Mrs Ella Shenk's home Wednesday.
Luther League to meet in church parlors Thursday evening with young men serving refreshments. Julette Services planned for Christmas morning at 6 00 AM. Sunday School to reconvene Saturday evening at 7 00. Senior Choir to present cantata during Christmas week. Swede Home Club meets at Mrs Alvin Swans Tuesday afternoon. Several local residents visited relatives and attended events in nearby towns including Wahoo Stromsburg and Grand Island. Myron Jones had surgery at Immanuel hospital Omaha. Curtis Schwartz returned from Colorado Springs. Oysters served at Farmers Union Close meeting Friday night at Swede Home Hall.
Local items report a birthday observance for Mrs. Hastings mother of Mrs. Brown and guests, a Seeberger farm sale to Chas Augustine for 27 253 dollars, and a Council Bluffs funeral for A W Tyler with Osceola burial. Also noted are travel for the McFaddens and hospital progress for Mrs. Oberg, plus Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star gatherings in town.
Polk will be judged Monday evening for the most beautifully decorated homes in the city. The decision rests with five judges: the four ministers in town and Rev Juer gensen of the German Lutheran Church. Prizes total 600 dollars with 300 for first, 200 for second, and 100 for third.
A telegram from Santa at the North Pole announces he will visit Polk next Saturday at 3 PM. He will stay briefly and distribute candy and treats to local children and invites all kids to meet him in Polk.
Hordville Gleaners group met at Laverne and Harlan Peterson's home. The Nelsons, Gustafsons, and many locals joined church events, baptisms, and farewells. The grade school presented The Cobbler of Fairyland. Baptist and Lutheran events plus a Friday oyster supper featured Fire-Chief Haddix as speaker. Chapman beat Hordville in one game, while Hordville won the second basketball game on Friday night.
A Lincoln federal court jury awarded Claire Karns 3000 in a personal injury case arising from a June 15, 1935 collision on highway 39 near Osceola. Karns and other passengers testified about injuries from a mail carrier's vehicle. The defense claimed contributory negligence and limited backing. Reforms indicate no appeal is expected.
Berneice Malmen and Leland Johnson wed at the Lutheran parsonage with Rev. A F Trued officiating. Attendants were Cecil Bennett and wife. The bride, Stromsburg High alumna, later worked at Christensen Drug and another Lincoln post. The groom, Clay Center High School graduate, has resided in Stromsburg. They plan to live with Mrs. J F Thayer after a brief wedding trip.
Mrs Roy Benson Mrs Nellie Peterson Rev Roscoe Bailey Mr and Mrs Joe Johnson and Mrs Rudolph Gustafson attended a birthday party for Mrs Albert Johnson at her Hardville home Friday evening. Home Society Club met with Mrs Carl Detloff Tuesday afternoon. A quilt was made for Nebraska's Children Home in Omaha. Grand Island visitors included Mr and Mrs C A Carlson Mrs Minnie Nicholson Mrs W C Steele Mrs L E Blase and Mrs Robert Steenbach. A dinner party at Gordon home featured Leona McConnell Ruth Bodine and others. Additional visits included Rev and Mrs Paul Carlson Mr and Mrs Wilmer Rodine and Mrs Lillie Johnson. Further dine-ins included Mr and Mrs Ralph Culver of Stromsburg and Gordon family. Miss Lou Leymaster Osceola spent weekend with sister Mrs Ross Goethe. Mrs L B E Blase Mrs C A Carlson and Mrs Henry Reed traveled to Lincoln Wednesday on business and visiting relatives.

Polk County is among twelve Nebraska districts approved to receive AR E A funds. The plan allocates 350 miles of transmission lines serving about 800 potential customers, with a county meeting at the Court House Thursday night for explanations by an AR E A representative and a state extension engineer.
Last Saturday drew a large Polk crowd for a free pancake event hosted by the Commercial Club in partnership with Nebraska Consolidated Mills. Viking Hall served as the dining hall with nine hundred people fed and about four thousand pancakes baked.
The Vested Choir of the Baptist Church will perform a Sacred Cantata in the church auditorium on Sunday evening December 20. The public is invited to attend.

Christmas party at the Green home featured gifts and lunch with guests including Clyde and Will Green and Glen Green. Local church Ladies Aid to meet with pot luck lunch. Farmers Union oyster supper drew about 150 people with Norgard and Hagge as speakers and Ostburgs performing.
