Iowa Faces Loss of Topsoil Across Century
Environmental Notebook reports that half of Iowa’s topsoil has vanished over 100 years of farming. William Brune testifies to a Senate agriculture committee in July 1976 that topsoil has dwindled from 12–18 inches to 6–8 inches in heavy farming areas and is eroding at about 13 tons per acre per year, risking a barren breadbasket if unchecked.
