County Committee Elected to Study School Reorganization

Polk County forms a county committee under the Reorganization Bill to study potential district consolidations. The panel, including Mrs Dora M Lockard and others, will assess educational needs and cost savings before proposing boundary changes to the State Committee and patrons at hearings.

Winners of Polk Guessing Contest Draw Large Crowd

The Polk community held a merchants sponsored guessing contest with results announced by Everett Green from the band stand. Winners across many venues claimed bolts, inches of string, lead, groceries, and other prizes with about 300 people in attendance on Main Street.

Bouquet Honors Anonymous Donation To Memorial Fund

An anonymous donor sent $300 to the Benson and Isaacson Memorial Fund of the Methodist Church. A letter accompanying the gift praised the three. The money will support the memory of Gilbert Benson Ronnie Isaacson and Arnold Isaacson in Polk community.

Chest X-ray Unit Arrives in Polk Friday

The State Department of Health brings a chest x-ray unit to Polk on Friday December 16 and Monday afternoon December 19. Set up in the fire hall with doctors and technicians in charge, the drive urges all residents to participate. X-rays take a minute, reports are confidential, and the effort supports community health.

Nearly 200 guests braved a snowstorm to honor Mr. and Mrs. T A Stevens at a Polk Methodist Church open house marking their 50th wedding anniversary. The program featured daughter Mrs. Sundberg of Rockford quilting events while grandchildren and relatives performed and read.

The Polk Womans Club met December 5 at the lodge hall for a Christmas program enjoyed by members and children. Gideon Bible Society talk and local agricultural notes

Polk residents hosted Gideon Bible Society representatives who spoke at the high school and distributed Bibles to those lacking them, with over 80 given. Herman Lassle of Scottsbluffs visited town, noting his area’s sugar beet yield of over 2 1/? tons per acre on 75 acres, once paying $500 per acre.

Polk Business Places Entered Tuesday

The Farmers Elevator at Polk was broken into early Tuesday with forced front door. About $800 in cash and roughly equal value in checks were stolen from the safe. A sledge hammer was left at the scene and no insurance on the money. The Union Pacific tool house was also broken into but reportedly nothing taken.

Celebrate Silver Wedding Anniversary at Lassie Home

A group of 65 relatives and friends gathered at Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lassie’s home on Sunday to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Rev. C. W. Long spoke, music by Mrs. Max Jones and Mrs. Henry Blase, readings by Mrs. Max Jones and Miss Berniece Anderson, and songs by Beyrnes and Sneed. Herman Laessle poured, and Mrs. Herman Blase served cake as gifts and cards poured in.

Mrs Ed Dobberstein entertained seven boys at her home on Saturday afternoon for the seventh birthday anniversary of her son Glen Edward. Games and refreshments provided diversion for the afternoon. Each guest received a story book as a favor. Glen received several nice gifts.

Methodist Youth Gather Corn For Missionary Fund

The Rev. Paul Walker and Methodist Youth Fellowship pick corn with a mechanical harvester at the Will Stevens farm. They gathered 43 bushels in the afternoon to support the Gerald Sumners Missionary Fund and ministers pension drive. Polk Citizens Raise 192.80 for Overseas Relief Drive

A total of 192.80 was raised in Polk for the Religious Overseas Relief Drive. Five organizations aided the canvass led by Rev M E Olson and Rev Paul Walker of the Ministerial Association. Leo Wurtz chaired and Mrs Don Ostberg served as treasurer with support from Neal McNaught Albert Sundberg Lloyd Kroger Merle Stromberg Arnold Neuhaus Oscar Jones and the Polk Womans Club and American Legion.

Shower Honors Joyce Jones For Upcoming Wedding
