Christmas Tree Rush Follows Snowstorm Hype

Local merchants noted a slow pre storm period with a late rush after snow fell. Mrs. Lloyd Kroger performed a Good Neighbor deed aiding Mrs. Fred Blase when Fritos of KFAB called, Ruth delivering clue sheets to assist. Mrs Base received $70. Polk expects another call soon with two guaranteed dealer stock calls.

Coovers Hear Fritos Program in Woodward Visit

Mr and Mrs Ed Coover on the way to California wrote to their daughter Mrs Arlo Stevens that they heard the KFAB Fritos program in Woodward Oklahoma last Monday when the station called Mrs Fred Blase of Polk. Philip Sack of Crete was in the Baptist Church cantata audience Sunday evening enjoying the music and perhaps recalling his days directing the Polk Baptist choir.

Woman's Country Club Sees 30 Attend December Meeting

About 30 members gathered at Mrs. Elwyn Johnson's home for the Christmas program of carols and readings organized by Mrs. Grant Johnson and Mrs. Roger Gustafsoni. The group held a gift exchange and voted to send a Christmas gift to the Children’s Saving Institute in Omaha.

X Ray Survey In Polk Draws 404 Patients At Fire Hall

The state health department brought an x ray unit to Polk last Friday and Monday afternoon. Two technicians staffed the setup in the fire hall and managed the crowd efficiently. Four hundred four people were x rayed and will receive mailed results in about ten days. Credit is given to Rolland Dahlin for arranging the transformer and wiring and to several local women and clubs for clerical help and hosting.

Shower for Joyce Jones Held at Mrs Blase Home

A Christmas themed miscellaneous shower honored Miss Joyce Jones at the home of Mrs. Ervin Blase on Tuesday evening. Guests enjoyed games around a large Christmas tree and admired gifts placed on a lace covered table with flowers. About 25 attendees shared a two course lunch prepared with Mrs. Norman Reetz as co hostess.

Polk youngster sprains ankle after church steps fall

Marilyn daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Hahn hobbling on crutches after she fell on the Methodist church steps following choir practice Thursday evening. She crawled on her hands and knees to the parsonage for help.

Christmas Cantata Draws Big Crowd at Baptist Church

The Christmas cantata The Lord of All was presented Sunday evening at the Baptist Church under Miss Leota Sneed. Thirty performed with Mrs. Robert Merchant at organ and Mrs. M. H. Olson at piano. Soloists included Alton Wilhelms, Willard Lindburg, Robert Merchant, George Otte, Wilbur Whitacre, Mrs. Ralph Johnson, Stromsburg and Lloyd Lind. Duets by Beverly Jones and Willard Lindburg and Mrs. Robert Merchant and Mrs. George Otte. A ladies quartet featured Betty Creech, LaVonne Lyle, Mari Belle Lyle, and Mrs. Paul Coover. Beyrnes and Sneed played a trombone number.

Arnold Blase Victim Of Heart Attack

The community mourns Arnold Blase who died early Thursday from a heart attack. Survivors include his wife two children and his mother sisters and brothers from the area. Funeral services were held Sunday at Brauer Funeral Home and Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. C W Long officiating. Born in Hamilton county he moved two years ago to Polk with his family.

Home Society Christmas Party Held At Mrs Kroger S Home

The Home Society met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. W. J. Kroger’s home with about 14 attendees. Members presented poems and stories including Buying Hubby s Christmas Present and Silent Night, plus recitations and a welcome piece. A pot luck lunch followed and the group sang carols.

Missionary Society Hosts Christmas Meeting and Bazaar

Mrs. Robert Merchant hosted the Down Arborville Way Missionary and Aid Society gathering on December 14 with twelve members and two visitors. The service led by Mrs. Arthur Shultz featured The Way the Truth and the Life, and a business session noted a donation letter from a New Mexico Mission school teacher. The bazaar left twelve dollars from a silent auction, boosting receipts to about $180 for supper and sales. Contributions to missions were approved, meals offered in Christmas colors, and a luncheon served by the hostess.

Tree Lighting Dedication Honors Parish Founder

A Sunday evening ceremony drew over a hundred attendees for the official lighting of the parish tree. The service by the Sunday School intermediate group featured violin, flute, accordion and guitar as parishioners sang carols. Lights flashed on at the moment of dedication, with scripture readings and a closing prayer. The tree, planted over 40 years ago by former pastor Rev. D. E. French, serves as a living memorial to his work.

Twelve members of the Community Club met with Mrs. Floyd Merchant on Thursday, December 15. The afternoon featured a gift exchange and a reveal of secret sisters. Refreshments included Christmas tree shaped cookies decorated to match the color scheme.

Faithful Workers Club Holds Christmas Meeting

The Faithful Workers Club met at Mrs. Ester Lackey home on December 15 with nineteen members and three visitors. Program chairwoman Mrs. Lawrence Larson presented ten preschoolers in a Christmas Story program with songs and recitations. Santa Claus distributed gifts and assisted in the secret sister gift exchange, while hosts Mrs. Clifford Carlson and Mrs. Lyle Dornburgh added evergreen favors and refreshments. Local members and guests visited nearby homes later in the weekend.

Polk High adjusts 1950 football and awards

The 1950 football schedule drops Guide Rock and Newman Grove due to travel. Silver Creek switches to six man football removing them from the schedule. St Paul added for Sept 15, Shelton Sept 29, and St Mary of Grand Island Nov 3. Commencement speaker will be Paul L Johnson May 18. X ray screening covered nearly all students grades 7 to 12 at Polk Fire Hall finishing around 2:30 p.m.

Polk Cubs Fall In Inaugural Home Game To Gresham

The Polk Cubs lost 27 to 17 in their first home game as a small crowd watched. Polk struggled with shooting in the first half, trailing 15 to 2 at halftime, and could not overturn the deficit despite a scoring burst in the third quarter led by Gaylen Holmes.

Brainard Undercuts Polk 28 17 In Christmas Eve Bout

Polk Cubs fall to Brainard 28 to 17 marking the third loss of the season after an early surge led by Roger Long. The game ended with Brainard pulling away after the first quarter and Polk unable to sustain scoring before the holidays. Next up is Benedict at home January 6.
