Rural Youth Meeting at Stromsburg Grade School featured horticulturist Wayne C Whitney from the State Extension Office discussing yard beautification and lawn care. Osceola hosted a December 2 officers training for the Women’s Extension Club with 1950 plans and leadership from Mrs. Byers and Miss Filter. Shelby saw the formation of a new Women’s Extension Club led by Mrs Lysle Hopwood.

Chest X-Ray Unit Comes to Polk Friday

The State Department of Health will bring a chest x-ray unit to Polk on Friday December 16 and Monday afternoon December 19. Set up at the fire hall, doctors and technicians will oversee the screening. Residents and nearby areas are urged to participate as the procedure takes about a minute, keeps clothing on, and reports are confidential.

Farm Bureau Members Attend State Convention in Lincoln

Twenty Polk County Farm Bureau leaders attended the 31st Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation convention in Lincoln. Arthur Ekstrom said the meeting was among the best in years with over 500 registered from more than 60 counties. Delegates reaffirmed support for a state income tax, debated road and tax policies, and endorsed the Nebraska Rural Radio Association as a major project for 1950.

Allan Samuels Buried Here Monday

Funeral services for Allan Samuels, 77, who died Friday at his son’s home in Curtis, were held at the Curtis Methodist church and Polk Baptist Church. Interment followed at the Swedish Baptist cemetery near Polk. Survivors include two sons Kenneth of Curtis and Mervin of Polk. two daughters Mrs. Ben Piteriots and Mrs. Orlie Miller of Polk.

Christmas Tea Honors Mothers at Methodist Church

A Christmas Tea at the Methodist Church parlors honored the mothers of the junior Sunday School Department with Mrs. Oscar Sundberg in charge. Colored slides of the Christmas story were read by Mrs. Glenn Hill as the WSCS served a lunch to about 50. The church featured a large decorated tree and gifts for mission-school children, orphan relief, and coffee labels for donation.

New Club Organized In Polk County

Mrs Richard Cramer and Mrs Junior Glasser formed a new club for young women in Polk County. The first meeting was November 3 at Mrs Glasser’s home and the second on December 2 at Mrs Cramer’s. Officers elected include President Mrs Junior Glasser Vice President Mrs Max Joens Secretary Treasurer Mrs Wayne Lindholm. A lunch for 14 ladies concluded the meetings with program leaders Mrs Anderson and Mrs Hahn to discuss a Washington DC trip.

Bouquet at Polk Honors Mrs Sundberg for Charity Work

Mrs Oscar Sundberg receives a bouquet for leading Polk church and community drives. She organized Butternut table collections and promoted Sunday School participation with schoolchildren. The coffee firm sent orphan gifts via label program, aiding over 800 orphans last year. Violet Sundberg joined Polk Bank in 1923, married locally, and has since led church and Woman's Club activities.

Bazaar And Cafeteria Supper Well Attended

The Ladies Missionary and Aid Society of Arborville sponsored a bazaar and cafeteria supper on November 30 at the town hall. Two ladies per dish, Florence Shockey waited tables, and officers Mrs. Harold Bedient president Mrs. John Wochner assisted by Mrs. Elwood Toole and Mrs. R. E. Merchant. Exhibits arranged by Mrs. Robert Merchant, Mrs. Leland Bowers and Mrs. Ester Lackey. Children sold homemade candy. About 150 dollars raised. Menu included chicken pie sweet potatoes cranberry salad apple and pumpkin pie and coffee.
