R H Thesing dies in Stromsburg obituary note

R H Thesing born February 10 1873 in Henderson County Illinois died December 5 1945 in Stromsburg aged 72 years 9 months 25 days. He joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Benedict around 1894. He married Hilda Runquist October 7 1914. Survived by brother Chris of Stromsburg three sisters Mrs Frank Anderson Dora Thesing and Mrs Ray Phillips of Moline Illinois and many nieces and nephews. Funeral held December 9 at Brauer Funeral Home with Masonic Order in charge burial in Swede Plain cemetery.

A county Legion meeting and banquet at Swanson's Hall Stromsburg last Wednesday evening drew a large crowd. Veterans of World War I and II including F. W. Mrs George Wilson visited relatives in Lincoln from Tuesday to Wednesday. Mrs Florence Dyer accompanied her home for a few days. Mr and Mrs John Wessel and daughter with Clarence Paden visited the Maurice Flick home for Mrs Flicks birthday. About twenty guests played cards Sunday evening. Several families visited hospitals and homes in Aurora Stromsburg Marquette Benedict Deshler and York. The Twentieth Century Club held a Christmas meeting with small attendance. Captain and Mrs Thomas King and family were luncheon guests in York. Cpl Harlan Werner and Dorothy VonFange visited Grand Island and Deshler for wedding anniversary celebration. Cpl Lloyd Morris of Hamilton Field Calif returned home after discharge.

Local Folks Attend Ceremonies and Gather for Holidays

Mrs John Stariscik plans to attend Capping Ceremonies in Denver at St Joseph Hospital this week. Mary Anne Stariscik is a nursing student in the class of 1946. Bentley Brown discharged from the Navy on December 6 at Maryland after enlisting in 1942 and 22 months aboard at Norfolk. Captain and Mrs E. M. Burr of Ft. Meade visited here, with plans to settle in Florida after discharge. A turkey shoot at the fair grounds drew a large crowd despite freezing weather, sponsored by the Legion. Wayne Anderson notified his parents of arrival on the West Coast and Denver discharge plans. three years service, two overseas, in the Signal Corps of the 13th Air Force. Dr. and Mrs. Hoberg traveled from Corpus Christi for a family death in Sargent, Neb. Pvt. Gene Cole returned from McCook air base for a three day pass. transfer to a Texas camp planned. Lowell Hanson resumed post office duties after Navy enlistment. Parish group St Andrews held a Christmas party at the Albers home with high card prizes awarded to Mrs Ervin Grossnicklaus and Louis Shemek. Families shared Sunday dinners near Stromsburg. Joe Nuquist returned from Madison, Wis. for Christmas. Robert Nuquist to visit from Long Beach for holidays, then return to California. Mr. and Mrs. V. Hurst planned Denver holidays with son Harry Flurst. Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Peterson hosted the 49er bridge club. Herman Anderson won traveling prize. County Judge Merrick issued a marriage license to Eleanor G Scow of Shelby and Clifford D Colvin of Ada Okla.

State Testing Laboratory advises testing oats for germination and purity and asks farmers to submit samples soon to the Extension Office. A county test plot for oat varieties may run with 100 farm samples by January 1 to justify spring 1946 planting.

Louis Meryl 22 of Brainard is hospitalized at St. Francis with leg injuries and facial cuts after his borrowed car veered off Highways 306A and 81 near Brainard, smashing a guard rail. He claimed two men gave him a ride and liquor, a tale later found to be false. the vehicle belonged to Joe Riha of Omaha and was driven from Brainard to Osceola before the crash.

Tax collections reach all time high in County

County Treasurer Carleton Anderson reports November tax receipts surpassed 9 000 for real estate and personal taxes excluding auto. Comparisons show 1941 November collections at 32 000 and 1943 around 50 000, with heavier payments due to rising taxes and greater ability to pay in some districts.

Mrs Christine Johnson Swanson Rites Held In Stromsburg

Mrs Christine Johnson Swanson, born February 18 1873 in Sunne Varmiland Sweden, died December 5 at Osceola hospital aged 72 9 22. She immigrated in 1893, settled near Osceola, married Edward Swanson February 24 1897, had three children, two grandchildren, and two U S Navy relatives. Funeral services were held December 7 at Kepner Funeral Home Osceola and Evangelical Covenant Church Stromsburg with interment in Stromsburg cemetery.
