Last Friday Polk grade and freshmen teams dropped a double header to Stromsburg. The Grade squad fell 39 to 33, and the Freshmen were defeated by a wide margin.
The Polk High School reports student pictures sold by Whiterose Studio of Chicago and many students working on annuals. The High School Library is cataloging for improvement. The Homemaking Style Show, postponed from December 4 due to late garments, will be held December 11 at 2:00 PM in the High School Auditorium.
Lois I. Johnson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Philip Johnson of Polk, was initiated into the Association for Childhood Education chapters at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Seventeen students were initiated this time to promote education programs and practices.

Polk defeats Stromsburg on Stromsburg floor 42 to 41 in season opener. Jack Myers and Waldon McNaught spark the comeback with crucial late scoring as Waldon adds 16 points and Myers directs plays. Final margin stays tight through four quarters.
The Faithful Workers Club held a Christmas season pay-up party at Arborville Town Hall on Friday December 1 attended by the winners and about 50 members and guests. County Agent Hecht of York demonstrated folk dancing and Mrs Cleo Cramer led the losing side in hosting a pie and coffee lunch.

He will attend the December 9 open house for the new REA building, a $75 000 modern facility showcasing demonstrations and a 150-visitor reception room.

Polk High School junior class presents a three act comedy Great Scotts directed by Leamons on Friday December 8. The plot centers on the rival Scotts families in Snyderville whose feuds melt as Marian and Natalie complicate glamour schemes and a fence tearing Grandma verdicts a feud across a lively cast headlined by Marian Scott and Natalie Scott with a colorful town backdrop.
The Christ mas program committee met with Mrs. Marvin Fredricks and other members. The program is set for Wednesday evening December 20 at the church. The Bible Study Class led by Miss Nell Aker also meets Wednesday evening at the church. Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Johnson left December 13 for Memphis to visit son Derald in the service, meeting him in Dardanelle on the way back to camp. A group enjoyed ice skating at the Ray Werner farm. lunch was served by Mrs. Werner. Martin Thompson and Ray Werner left for Jackson Hole Wyoming to hunt elk and deer, planning to return to Crawford for deer season. Mrs. C. H. Lindburg, a former Polk resident, is a patient in Clarkson Hospital Omaha with a fractured hip. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Adelson and Mrs. Hennie Seymour were luncheon guests Friday of Mrs. Frank Adelson and others. Sunday guests included Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Stunkel and family at Mrs. Wm. Stunkel’s home.
The Pork Fire Department answered a fire call at the Ray Werner home when a tractor burst into flames as Roger was filling it with gasoline. Damage was negligible but fuel tanks nearby could have caused major harm. credit to Polk Fire Department for quick response.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Gleim and Miss Dorothy Hanquist attended Homecoming at Norfolk Junior College. Dads of football players sat on a special bench wearing their sons numbers. Ernie Gleim a Polk High All State performer in 1948 was chosen honorary co captain for the season. Ernie is president of the Sophomore class at Norfolk Junior College.
Gordon Glad lost parts of two fingers after a corn picker mishap last Tuesday. His hand was saved from more serious injury, marking the first corn picking accident reported in Polk area this season.
Ralph Fisher edged 39 other shooters in the blue rock event at Seward last Sunday to win the trophy, hitting 49 of 50 targets at 16 yards with a sharp eye and steady nerves.
Polks business houses host a free guessing contest this Saturday December 9 where participants guess a close number. Prizes worth five dollars in merchandise. Entries require name and presence at prize announcements after the 3:30 close and 4:00 drawing. Next Saturday December 16 Santa returns with treats and a free children’s show.
The Methodist, Baptist and Evangelical Free churches held a Sunday night sing fest at the Methodist Church with Lucille Johnson directing and Donna Gell at the piano. Readings on Christmas customs featured Iris Richards Jimmie Sundberg Walden McNaught and Barbara Walker with songs by Mrs Paul Walker and Mrs Lloyd Kroger. Kenneth Bedient Dorothy Hanquist performed solos. Families visited in Benedict and Dennison Iowa. Adult Fellowship to meet at Glen Hill with Mrs Merle Stromberg and Mrs Kenneth Stewart in charge. Visitors included Harvey Leamons family and Carlyn Strand at the hospital. Continuous local visits include Mr and Mrs Donald Hahn of Minneapolis and guests from Aurora and Cheyenne. Manley Fisher of Blair visited Chas Lytle and Grant Johnson.
The Polk High School Auditorium event by the Swede Plain WSCS drew over 400 attendees. Swedish foods filled two-tier serving tables with yellow and blue candles and chrysanthemums while Mrs. Arthur Samuelson poured. About 1000 meat balls and 100 pounds of potato bologna were served. Net profit topped 450, earmarked for a new organ and electric stove.
The WSCS of Swede Plain Church will meet at the church on Wednesday afternoon December 13. Mrs. Harvey Lind and Mrs. Robert Shostrom will lead the program with hostesses Mrs. Phillip Johnson Mrs. Oscar Person and Mrs. Gilbert Gertsch assisting.
Immanuel Lutheran Church activity includes Sunday School at 10 a m Bible study 10 a m Divine Worship 10 30 a m with the Lord's Supper December 17. Christmas party December 10 at the church basement. Numerous visits and social events noted among local families and baptisms at Grand Island.
