Welfare reform crusade cuts fraud in DC relief rolls

Sen. Robert Byrd leads a drive to purge welfare lastingly, reporting 60 percent of care for dependent children ineligible and 40 percent for the disabled in DC. Investigations reveal fraud, working recipients, and hidden support. Byrd urges trained investigators, warns costs rise, and notes national welfare at about 5 billion annually. Moisture supplies show rainfall for the week ending Saturday as trace. Surface and subsoil moisture supplies are short. Irrigated crops are excellent. others are good. Third cutting alfalfa 20% complete. Corn 70% not yet in dough, 30% in dough. Legumes 10% fall seeded. Pasture and range feed average. Main farm work includes fall sowing prep for wheat and legumes, irrigation, alfalfa and prairie hay work. Dryland crops suffer from moisture shortage. rain needed for dryland row crops and fall sowing fields. Livestock prices reported very good.
