Polk's Bean Days schedule advances with beans, barbecue, carnival, and booths for a weekend event. Lloyd Stromberg of the Commercial Club says volunteers are being gathered to organize a teen street dance after a letter from local youth offering help. A free bicycle giveaway is planned and volunteers can contact the Polk Progress for details.
Darwin Newton named chairman of the Psychology Department at Eastern Kentucky State College in Richmond. He will assume duties Sept. 1 after serving two years as Director of Guidance for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System in North Carolina. Enrollment at EKSC expected around 6,500 students this year.
A family dinner in North Park Central City honored Mrs George Colby on her birthday. Omaha guests included the Colby families Cleve land Hills Robertson Comstock and others. Mission Circle met August 12 with devotions piano solo program and a light service followed by hostess duties.
Gary Garey reports short surface and subsoil moisture with high irrigation of raw crops. Alfalfa first and second cuttings finished with about 5 percent of the third cutting underway. farmers doing alfalfa haying and preparing fields for legumes and wheat sowing. Dryland corn and sorghums stressed by hot dry weather, while cattle and calves look good in most pastures.
Joe Donald Forester 47 died after a hay stack contacted a high line while moved at Eve Bowring’s Merriman, Nebraska ranch. He recently moved from Lincoln. survivors include his wife a son and his mother Mrs Bowring a cattle ranch operator and former Federal Board of Paroles member.
Lottie Mae Creech aged 61 died Aug 7 while vacationing in the Black Hills and northern Nebraska. She lived in Polk after moving from York and Keya Paha counties and was active in church and Sunday School. Funeral Aug 11 at First Baptist Polk with burial Arborville Cemetery.
A hospital notes roster lists patients and their towns including Osceola Stromsburg Shelby Gresham Columbus Polk York Clarks and others. Names include Victor Sterup Neal McKeag James McMeekin Lulu Barr John Simonsen Joe Kresha Suzanne Trotter Joy Barr and many more.
Virgil Wurtz age 45 of York died early Thursday morning August 12 at York General Hospital. Born March 24 1920 in York County he was a 1938 York high school graduate and husband of Darlene Christensen since 1942. He farmed near Hampton then York County worked for Farm ers Union Co op of York and served as a Baptist Congregational Church trustee. Surviving are his wife son Jerry his father three sisters and a brother. Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at Baptist Congregational Church with burial at Greenwood Cemetery.
