Polk Bean Days planned with carnival and parade

Final plans for the Sept 10 11 Polk Bean Days set by chairman Lloyd Stromberg include a carnival and concessions on Friday, a 8 p.m football game Polk vs Stromsburg and a 10 p.m dance, and a Saturday parade at 10 a.m. with prizes, plus free beans and barbecued beef and a 1 30 p.m Invitational horse show.

Polk County Crops-Weather and Field Notes

Moisture supplies for the week ending Saturday range from 0.60 to 1.50 inches with surface and subsoil moisture short. Crop conditions vary from excellent irrigation to good soybeans and fair others. alfalfa third cutting at 60 percent, corn 20 percent not in dough, 40 percent in dough, 40 percent dented but not hard. Legumes 80 percent fall seeded. pasture average. Main work includes sowing preparations, weed control on idle acres, alfalfa and prairie hay work, with some irrigation ongoing. The drought situation improved with last weekend’s moisture, though more is needed for corn. livestock activity is minimal. A weather balloon incident near Hardville drew attention, with 1,200-foot-long craft departing Chico, California August 4 and landing after attracting sightseers and UFO stories. Scholarships to U N are told in Polk County

Six Polk County students received scholarships and work grants totaling 2180 for the 1965 66 school year to attend the University of Nebraska. Recipients include Julianne Gullberg of Osceola Steven Flodman of Polk Vera Burke and Larry Johnson of Shelby and Steven McBeth of Polk plus Marvel Davis of Shelby and Vera Burke entries note Regents and Miller Brownell memorial awards. Local entries note Hamilton County Fair awards for Mrs Walter Green and Mrs Walter Baker.

Cubs Grid Practice Near Season Opener

With one week of football practice completed the Cubs work on blocking tackling and timing for the first game with Stromsburg on Sept 10. Eleven lettermen and many promising reserves are listed as the squad prepares under coaches Tranmer and Wightman. Sundberg enrolled at Lincoln School of Commerce for the fall term starting Sept 27 to study accounting. Polk markets for soybeans and corn are listed at 2.10 and 1.13 respectively.

Edwin A Shostrom 82 Polk County resident dies

Edwin A. Shostrom died at Osceola Hospital on August 27 at age 82. He was born December 26, 1882 in Stroms burg, the last surviving of ten siblings, and lived on the family homestead for nearly 60 years. He served as district moderator for over 20 years and wrote about early Polk County days. Funeral services were held August 30 at Anderson Funeral Chapel Stromsburg with Rev. Larry Casper officiating. interment Swede Home Cemetery.

Exhibit set for Bean Days by Polk Garden Club

The Polk Garden Club sponsors a Flower Fruit and Vegetable exhibit at Alfred's Building during Bean Days on Sept 10 and 11. Open to all, with exhibit drop off Friday Sept 10 between 2 and 5 pm. The event is a major attraction of Polk's Bean Days. A family reunion at Polk Park Aug 29 honored several residents from San Diego Sioux Falls Omaha and nearby towns with many Shenk and Shenks family members in attendance.
