The Alfred couple’s Golden Wedding drew nine children and 21 grandchildren from four winds. Polk citizens housed and fed guests with aid from the Baptist Missionary Society and local families, hosting a Sunday church ceremony and a large afternoon reception with friends from Colorado to New York.
A Tuesday night gathering at the Herman Carlson home included Mrs. Frida Waller and Kenneth, Mrs. Sam Bucana, Donna and Phillip of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Carlson and Jory of Clarks, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carlstrom and others.
Mr and Mrs Mervin Shenk marked their silver pink 25th wedding anniversary with a Sunday gathering at home. About seventy five relatives and friends attended. gifts were registered by Mrs Earl Hoffer and Mrs Albert Sundberg. two hostesses poured, and a pink summer bouquet with silver candles framed a dainty lunch.
The annual Colby family picnic gathered 61 relatives from several branches at Polk Park on Sunday August 16 for dinner and visiting. The oldest attendee was John Dick Shockey of York and the youngest was seven week old Steven Shockey. Mrs Clellen Colby from New Westminster Canada traveled the farthest. Four generations were present in one family and the Scott family had the largest turnout with seven of nine children. Mrs Kittie Frazier was named general chair for next year’s picnic in Polk Park on the second Sunday in August.
A baby boy weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Graves of Clarks at Central City Hospital on Thursday August 13. Deborah Ann weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kahler Jr. on Sunday at York General Hospital. Mrs. Josephine Lindburg is visiting sister Mrs. Ella Johnson in Stromsburg. Rev. Edick Anderson supplied the pulpit at the Baptist Church in Stromsburg in Rev. Holmberg’s absence, with Mrs. Anderson her mother Mrs. Belle Summers and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Freeman of Stromsburg visiting in the Walter Rystrom home.
Targon and Elmer Andersons will supervise picnic tables and coffee service. At a school board meeting, Polk Public Schools were approved to open on September 8 to let families observe Labor Day and attend the State Fair.
Announcement reports the appointment of Rolland Dahlin as Light Commissioner for the City of Stromsburg. He will perform duties on a part time basis at present.
Three sales announced including Mrs E Nyberg sale today featuring farm machinery cattle hay and chickens with Hanquist and Galusha and First State Bank clerking. Ernest J Peterson dairy stock farm equipment and household goods sale August 26 two miles west and four miles north of Polk owned by Merrick and Noble with Citizens State Bank clerking.
Private Jackie L. Lavelle son of Mr and Mrs Merle Lavelle Polk Neb completed basic training recently at the Medical Replacement Training Center Camp Picket Va At MRIC the Army s basic training school for enlisted men he received eight weeks of medical training The Infantry training covered subjects given to all new soldiers Medical subjects studied included Anatomy physiology military sanitation method of evacuation emergency medical treatment administration of medicines ward management hypodermic injection and operating room technique
Mr and Mrs M G Lindburg and Mr and Mrs Roy Glasser Sr traveled Friday to Estes Park Cole. Pam and Allen Cramer visited York with their uncle and aunt Bus Clerc. Their parents brought Suzanne and Jimmie Clerc home Sunday. Glenn Rose of Cozad and Charlotte Rose of Lincoln spent the weekend with Lavar Sandell and family. Visitors Sunday included Mr and Mrs Ellsworth Browning and their children from Grand Island.
Bud Bolton resigns as manager of the Farmers Union Co op Oil Assn effective September first. He will start new duties at the Jack and Fill grocery in Stromsburg after leaving his oil station post.
