Alfred Family Golden Wedding Celebrated by Polk Friends

The Alfred couple’s Golden Wedding drew nine children and 21 grandchildren from four winds. Polk citizens housed and fed guests with aid from the Baptist Missionary Society and local families, hosting a Sunday church ceremony and a large afternoon reception with friends from Colorado to New York.

Mr and Mrs Mervin Shenk Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Mervin Shenk marked their silver pink 25th wedding anniversary with a Sunday gathering at home. About seventy five relatives and friends attended. gifts were registered by Mrs Earl Hoffer and Mrs Albert Sundberg. two hostesses poured, and a pink summer bouquet with silver candles framed a dainty lunch.

Colby Family Picnic Draws Sixty One Attendees

The annual Colby family picnic gathered 61 relatives from several branches at Polk Park on Sunday August 16 for dinner and visiting. The oldest attendee was John Dick Shockey of York and the youngest was seven week old Steven Shockey. Mrs Clellen Colby from New Westminster Canada traveled the farthest. Four generations were present in one family and the Scott family had the largest turnout with seven of nine children. Mrs Kittie Frazier was named general chair for next year’s picnic in Polk Park on the second Sunday in August.

Two Newborns Reported as Local Babies

A baby boy weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Graves of Clarks at Central City Hospital on Thursday August 13. Deborah Ann weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kahler Jr. on Sunday at York General Hospital. Mrs. Josephine Lindburg is visiting sister Mrs. Ella Johnson in Stromsburg. Rev. Edick Anderson supplied the pulpit at the Baptist Church in Stromsburg in Rev. Holmberg’s absence, with Mrs. Anderson her mother Mrs. Belle Summers and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Freeman of Stromsburg visiting in the Walter Rystrom home.

At a school board meeting, Polk Public Schools were approved to open on September 8 to let families observe Labor Day and attend the State Fair.
