Maximums Increased for Old Age and Blind Assistance

Increased September payments raise Old Age maximum to 55 dollars and Blind to 60 dollars under the new law. Only cases with budget needs at or above these levels are affected as payments reflect actual needs and may still be limited by medical expenses or high rents.

Tractor Derby and Pet Parade at the Fair

Polk County’s 70th Fair features a tractor derby replacing the horse pull with two divisions for contestants 16 and under and adults. Points awarded for tractor condition and driver skill, prizes of 10 7.5 and 5 dollars, entrants register by Wednesday. A pet parade offers cash prizes and a seniors prize of 5 dollars each to the oldest attendee. Livestock exhibitors enter free. sale of exhibits ends Friday morning except saddle horses. Local visitors include Willard Lindburg Eaton Sundberg and Miller families with notes on hosting and contributions.

Local Children to Be Photographed Free for Progress Feature

The Polk Progress announces a forthcoming series of local children pictures taken by Waltz Studios of Des Moines. On August 29 expert child photographers will set up at the Hotel Library from 1 pm to 8 pm and publish pictures with no charge to parents. Four prizes will be awarded for the four cutest children in the trading area. eligibility is open to all, with no subscription or purchase obligation.

Merry Makers Celebrate Fourth Anniversary in 4-H

The Merry Makers 4-H Club observed four years of 4-H work with a park picnic. Members gave demonstrations during roll call and planned a County Fair booth to display sewn items. Special numbers by Marcia Johnson and Rocella Lindholm followed by games and a cake decorated with the 4-H emblem.

York visitors share Sunday dinner at Merchant home

George Keyes and his son Jim visited York for Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Merchant. Leroy Bills from Fort Warren Wyoming arrived Wednesday for a month long stay with his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Bills.

Sunny Sue 4-H Club Plans Achievement Day Demonstration

The Sunny Sue 4-H Club met with teacher Mrs Ellen Larson to plan Achievement Day. Martha Creech and Doris Harbour demonstrated “How to Look Your Best” and the next meeting will be at Ethel Doremus home. A lunch was served by Ellen Larson aided by Ethel Doremus. Alice Nelson visited friends in Omaha and Council Bluffs Iowa before returning home Sunday.

Lind Reunion At Buckley Park Sees 65 Attendees

The Lind families met at Buckley Park on August 9 1949 for their annual reunion with 65 members and two visitors. Rev Clarence Lind chaired the meeting before lunch. Five members attend every year since 1928: Amel Lind Florence Johnson Carl Lind Lloyd Lind and Alvena Lind. The secretary noted two marriages seven births and three deaths. A silent memory honored the deceased and prayers were offered. Committee for 1950 named Marjorie Lind Nellie LaVelle Mabel Carlson and Marjorie Dahlin. Visitors Gus Kleepe and Dick Gilbert noted with local hosts.

Softball gains popularity with eight local teams this summer

Community hosts eight softball teams led by Bud Bolton’s Commercial Club and Doyle Munn’s Legion, with weekly two five inning games on Tuesday or Thursday nights at 8 p m. A girls team recently beat the high school boys, drawing local spectators to the field.

Stromsburg Welcomes New Doctor G L Scholnick

Dr G L Scholnick of Omaha will become Stromsburg’s permanent physician, taking over after Dr W N Blomme retires to pursue surgical specialization. Scholnick studied at University of Nebraska and Nebraska Medical School, trained at Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Hospital in Omaha, and briefly led Dr Anderson’s practice during a vacation.

College staff member to speak at Arborville church

Professor Milo H. Crosbie of Central City a Latin and German professor and college treasurer will be guest speaker at Arborville Congregational Church next Sunday morning August 21 at 11 30 am. He is a Bible student and has done lay preaching.

Good Will Act Ends in Misfortune

Reverend Paul W. Walker, pastor, injured when an axe slipped while working on a highway. He pressed on with church duties despite swelling, but by Monday his leg worsened and a doctor prescribed treatment. Penicillin aided recovery and he is convalescing.

Miss Donna Sundberg Miss Janice Sundberg and Mrs Merle Stromberg hosted a miscellaneous shower for Miss Darlene Johnson Thursday. Former Denver forecasters honored for overseas assignment

S R Miller and Richard E Myers, Denver weather bureau forecasters, are selected for a two year overseas posting in Shannon Ireland to serve Trans Oceanic Airways as weather forecasters covering the region between Europe and North America. They join four others nationwide in a government loan to the assignment announced by A W Cook.
