One of Polk’s First Ladies Returns to Polk

Mrs. Raymond Cox, who arrived in Polk on January 1 1907 as a bride, recalls early Polk when corn fields and a few homes dominated the town. She helped found the Polk Library with the Woman’s Culture Club, later guiding the library’s shift to village funding and serving as a long time president. Her family’s home history links to the Coxes, the Hartwig Flodman and Hahn homes, and the Bank of Polk.

Rains Bring Dry Weather Relief in Polk Area

A series of showers drenched Polk County with 1.33 inches last Wednesday and 0.33 inches Thursday, with further downpours Sunday and Tuesday totaling up to 4.43 inches for August. Hail south of Polk damaged corn with reports of heavy losses, while winds and warm soil reduced root depth. Local gauges recorded up to 1.50 inches and some reports reached 1.90 inches. The rainfall boosts records for the month compared with July’s 2.41 inches.

4-H Club Meeting Highlights and Recognition

Pleasant Homemakers 4-H Club met July 28 with most members present and four visitors. Health Habit I Need To Improve was the roll call topic. The group donated to Kansas flood victims and heard demonstrations on preparing an invalids tray and serving a buffet style dinner.

Midgets Split Week With Shelby Win and Central City Loss

The Polk Midgets won 17 to 9 at Shelby on Friday but fell 6 to 3 to Central City on Sunday. Illness and absences kept nine players suited, with Bowers and Samuels on the mound at Shelby and Pabell, Light, and Light pitching at Central City. Polk finished second, Osceola winning the league, and a return game with Central City is set under lights at Kernal Field.

Arthur Bates former Polk resident and Polk band director earned All-American status as a member of the 1951 National Intercollegiate Band at Indiana University. About 100 college musicians from 32 institutions were selected for the honor lifelike to the All-American designation.

Young People Conference in Session at Campgrounds
