Firefighters from Osceola responded to a refrigerator fire that burned a floor hole, likely saving the home of Emil and wife on the J. O. Pearson farm southeast of Osceola. The incident occurred while the family was away, with a short in the fridge cited as the cause.
Polk's school system, touted as one of the best in the state, announces an nearly complete faculty list and a broad slate of subjects for Polk High School for students entering this fall.
Mrs. A. B. Hedbloom 78 longtime Nebraska educator died at her Stromsburg home after months of illness. She came to Nebraska in 1890 to teach at Daykin then moved to Stromsburg a year later. She led the Stromsburg Civic Improvement Club and the Polk County Federation of Women’s Clubs. Survived by daughters Hazel ie Hedbloom and Marjorie Kjelson both of Stromsburg and son A L Hedbloom Columbus services were held in Stromsburg Saturday.
James C. Olson recounts Nebraska’s 1867 capitol relocation from Omaha to Lancaster later Lincoln. A three man committee chose Lancaster despite opposition. lots sold for 15 to 150 dollars as the town grew to 2500 by 1870. The Legislature met in 1879 and the State University was seated there.
A dairy barn on District Judge B. G. Kroger’s Polk County farm burned early Monday. Tenant Frank Ostrander, milking 23 cows, discovered the blaze likely started by a pilot light in the hay loft filled with straw. Loss estimated at several thousand dollars, partially insured. water pressure system and stalls had been installed less than a year earlier.
Polk County's annual fair starts next Tuesday with top entertainment and weather permitting a record crowd. Stage shows ball games and midway rides will headline along with fine exhibits in 4 H and open classes. Check the fair program in this paper.
Congregation members in Arborville conducted worship for two Sundays while their pastor was on vacation. Next Sunday August 17 the men lead the service and August 24 the women will conduct it, reflecting a lay takeover under the scripture urging fellowship.
Clifford Erickson and others picnicked with Dr. Chas A. Rydberg at Harmon Field in Kearney. Maggie Austin of Hordville visited Stromsburg. Laverne Rystrom takes a two week vacation from Stromsburg Bank duties. R Nelson returned from Omaha hospital after surgery. A W Eelson family left for a Canadian vacation. Mrs Ernest A Olson and Harland Egbert of Valley visited. Oberg family visited the Harry Nelson home in Marquette. Wallace Fredrickson hosted a dinner with multiple guests including the Fredricksons and Andersons. Miss Fulton enrolled as a Luther College freshman in Wahoo.
A curious youngster, Stanley Doremus, son of Ralph and Mrs. Doremus, was stung while inspecting his grandfather’s beehives at the Polk area farm and was taken to Dr Bloom’s office in Stromsburg for treatment. The incident ends with Stanley likely avoiding the hives on future visits.
The 80th Congress faced reorganizational handicaps from 1946 acts reducing committees, yet passed nine major bills and twenty appropriation measures by mid July. Alma Dawkins files a damage action in district court against L F Bedient and his son Donald Bedient after a highway crash near Bradshaw on April 19. The suit seeks 1497.80 for injuries to Alma Dawkins and Deryl Reed and for damages to the Dawkins car.
The first vacation church school in Arborville’s Congregational Church concluded successfully last Friday. Total enrollment reached 35 with Rev. R.E. Harle Eaton directing the school and intermediate department, Mrs. Harold Bedient guiding juniors, and a primary staff including Mrs. Robert Merchant and others. Hope Eaton led kindergarten with Kenneth Bedient and Duane Sterner directing crafts and recreation. Vivian Anderson served as secretary. Fire officials report livestock saved as the Polk Fire Department was on scene during a building fire.
