Popular couple honored on wedding anniversary

Mr and Mrs Oscar Gustafson celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary Tuesday evening. Attending were Alfred Gustafson Rudolph Gustafson Elwood Sandell Reuben Gustafson and family from Hordville C R Leach Carroll Erickson M Hordville W A Stevens and Blanche Paul Stevens Irvin Anderson J Hahn Stromsburg and their families. A social hour followed and a supper was served. The guests presented the couple with a gift.

A Lindahl family picnic took place in Osceola City Park on Sunday. Osceola Theater Adds Modern Popcorn Machine

Osceola manager Frank Klein installs a new popcorn machine in the Muse Theatre lobby. It promises high quality popcorn and also produces caramel corn, potato chips, cheese chips, and other dainties for theater guests.

Fire at Olaf Nyberg Farm Stack Endangers Barn

Fire crews were summoned to the Olaf Nyberg farm home around noon Thursday to fight a straw stack blaze that threatened a nearby barn. The Nybergs were away in Columbus, wind aided suppression, and no damage occurred.

Polk County Farmers Hold Annual Picnic at Buckley Park

The Polk County Farm Bureau sponsored a large picnic at Buckley Park Stromsburg featuring V. Vaniman of the American Farm Bureau Federation who spoke on farm legislation and economic equality for agriculture. 4-H Club from Osceola performed and local readings and music were presented. Enoch Ekstrand and G L Woodsworth outlined progress toward rural electrification and district staff urged cooperation before wiring. Coffee was served by the Stromsburg Commercial Club.

Mathematics of Swindling and Slot Machines Banished in Riverside

A Riverside Illinois study by high schoolers tested slot machines showing a classroom machine returned 59 percent of deposits, while citywide machines averaged 21.5 percent winnings. The seven students urged banning the devices due to their appeal to children and links to crime.

State University officials report rising student employment as conditions improve. About 55 percent of male students and 34 percent of female students were employed last year with improved earnings for self supporting students. NYA funds may continue and typical earnings ranged from modest sums to $650, with meals often covering 21 meals weekly.
