Pengelly delivers a brief worship and sermon at 10:00 with Sunday School at 11:00. He urges all members to attend this Sunday to revitalize the congregation. Quarterly Conference is scheduled for next Wednesday evening and the Annual Conference starts September 6.
IM Lutheran Church led by Carl F Juergensen offers German services at 9 30 and English at 10 30 with an English Communion on August 21. Methodist Church under E Pengelly lists Sunday School 10 Morning Worship 11 and Evening 7 30 with Union Services planned in the Park if weather allows. Quarterly Conference next Tuesday and Annual Conference soon urge member reports.
Free Methodist and Free Mission churches announce services led by Pastors Montzingo and Carlson. Evening worships at 8:00 PM with gatherings for Sunday school at 10:00 and morning worship at 11:00, plus YPMS at 7:15 and prayer Thursday. The Nebraska State Young People’s Conference begins Tuesday evening August 16 and continues through Sunday. attendees urged.
Sunday School starts at 10:00 with Jr. and Sr. BYPU at 7:15 and prayer meeting Tuesday at 8:00. Choir practice Thursday at 8:00. Trustees and wives meet Monday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Lindburg. No midweek service Tuesday so all may attend Bible Camp where Rev Lundell of Chicago and Rev Prince of Minneapolis will speak August 16 to 21 across all services.
A reunion of former Women's Culture Club members was held August 4 in the Baptist Church parlor. Out of town guests included Mrs. O. Glad and Mrs. J. Carter of Omaha, Mrs. Pollock of Fremont, Mrs. Harlan Frazier of Ord, Mrs. J. G. Felton of Utica, Mrs. Refshauge of York, Mrs. Moore of Stromsburg and Mrs. Cox of Lincoln. Local attendees were Mesdames Shafer, Allison, Wurtz, Westfall, Sundberg, Hill and Alfred. three were charter members Cox, Westfall and Moore. A picnic lunch was served and plans were made for an annual event.
Ralph Anderson of Prescott Arizona son of Reverend E A Anderson has been awarded a Harvard University scholarship. A graduating senior he earned multiple awards and is National Honor Society member and class valedictorian. He will enter Harvard in the fall after a three week East trip and a stay in Boston with his aunt Mrs Lillian Brown.
Miss Lois Cockle of Arborville begins work as a reporter at the Progress office this week. The paper invites readers to assist her by providing news.
Mrs. R. H. Thesing died from injuries suffered in a two car collision near Aurora on Wednesday. Her husband R. H. Thesing was severely injured. his amputated leg and multiple skull fractures cited. C. W. Rice of Omaha, driver of the other car, was injured but survived. The couple from Polk and Hordville had been sightseeing when the crash occurred at State Highways 34 and 14.
Hilda Victoria Runquist Thesing, born October 8 1882 near Polk, died August 4 1938 at 55, 10, 4. She married Richard H Thesing on October 7 1914 and lived in Polk. A Swede Plain Methodist then Polk M E Church member, she cared for others and valued neighbors. She leaves Richard and three sisters Ed W Johnson Charley Hanquist Harry Carlson, plus nieces and nephews. Funeral at M FE Church by Rev Pengelly, burial in Swede Plain cemetery.
Miss Mary Fern Myers of Polk is among 259 graduates at the University of Nebraska summer session. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a university teachers certificate. The 1938 summer class was the largest in eight years. no summer commencement is held, graduates invited to June ceremonies.
Polk County announces its annual fair at the Polk County Fair Grounds from August 23 to 26. The program features nightly grandstand shows, the Louies Chinese Revue, band concerts, a Little Miss Polk County parade, a grand platform dance, races, rodeo, pet parade, 4 H parade, and a livestock exhibit with prizes, plus seven rides and seven shows by W. A. Gibbs and Sons Carnival.
Notes show Robert Nuquist defeats Jack Stanton in his bailiwick and carries several precincts including East Pleasant Home. W W Norton leads with Island yet to report and 34 mail votes awaiting count. Nellie Benson and Raymond Branting named for county clerk and treasurer with about 100 votes cast to ensure ballot inclusion. Stromsburg precinct votes unusually light. Owen McClung dominates first commissioner district. Jay Hastings tops district race with Roy Thomas as closest rival. Harless.
Edwin Pound Ellison 74 of Arborville died Sunday afternoon at his home six miles south of Polk after years of ill health. Born in Wisconsin November 7, 1863 he moved to York County at age 13 and lived near Arborville 61 years. Survived by daughters Bertha Beard White River S D and Hang Schrader York. sons Fred F Hampton and Milo Walla Walla Wa. Funeral Wednesday at ten at the family home Arborville with interment Arborville Cemetery.
Farmers and families crowded Polk for the annual Farmers Union Picnic at the city park. Events included a city league softball game, a noon basket dinner with free coffee, performances by the Polk High School Band, and an address by H. H. Keeney of Omaha, state president. The afternoon featured various races and contests.
Miss Eleanor Weaver daughter of Mrs C J Weaver wed Earl Cline son of Mr and Mrs W D Cline of Polk Sunday at 3 pm in her mother’s home. Rev A V Bunter read the service before about 50 guests. The bride wore a white gown with blue accessories and carried gardenias and roses. Thel la Iverson was maid of honor and Tom Kennedy was best man. Both graduates of the University of Nebraska, the couple will be at home near Lincoln after a trip to Denver and Estes Park.
The Jolly Workers 4 H Club met August 2 at Lois and Laura Doremus home. Rugs were judged and three demonstration teams were chosen: making a bed, lamp shades and waste baskets, and selection of pictures and picture frames for a girl's room. Teams prepare to meet Lincoln Representative at York County Court House August 12. Club picnic set for August 16 at Ogden Ola. Next meeting August 22 at Nora Mae Cline home with Florence Flick assisting. Delicous lunch served.
The annual Young People's Conference runs August 16 to 21. Mr EH B Prince of Winneapolis opens the event Tuesday evening, with daily 10 am Bible study by Rev Harry P. Lundell of Chicago and nightly talks by Prince at 7:30 pm. Afternoon sessions are scheduled and the public is invited.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scheapler and Donald visited Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Shockey on Sunday afternoon. Ray Stankel of Hardville and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Blase with Gladys called on Frank Scheapler. Gladys Blase visits near Hordville this week. R. D. Piper and son Roy and Mrs. Sarah Pickrel of Litchfield Nebr came Thursday to the Seth Piper home. Piper and Pickrel are Seth Piper’s siblings. Ralph Harrington spent the weekend with Lee Morris. Wm Kisler and daughter with Mr and Mrs A L Gibson dined with Keith Green. Herbert Bedient family of Bradshaw visited H. J. Bedient. Dorothy Bedient returned Friday from a week with W. E. Bedient in York. Chas Wyatt and family and Wallace Sherwood and family of Stromsburg visited Charles Bowers Sunday.
Mrs. H T Frazier of Ord visited the A W Shafer home from Wednesday evening until Friday evening.
The Swede Home Lutheran church honored Rev. Co A Sward on Tuesday evening August 2 marking his 70th birthday. Friends gathered amid harvest time as church leaders presented well wishes and a congregation gift. The program featured prayers, readings, musical selections, and tributes from Osceola, Wahoo faculty, and the Mriam Chorus, with socializing in the parlor to follow.

Mr and Mrs Emil Person visit her parents in York on Sunday. Linage of visits includes Mr and Mrs Wallace Nelson and family of Benedict. Mrs C R Peterson hosts dinner for birthday of husband with guests from Genoa Benedict and Lincoln. Amateur contest at the Fair opens August 23 led by Jay Hastings. Frank McConnell, former Polk County resident, dies in Huntley Nebraska August 8. Various visits include Central City Hampton Andover Illinois Swede Home and Lincoln.
The Annual Frog Pond Picnic will be held at City Park in Polk on Thursday, August 18. Residents are urged to bring dinner and attend. Organizers hope former teachers and out-of-town alumni will join in the event.
Plans for the Farm Bureau picnic August 16 at Osceola Park include a morning 4-H health contest for 15 plus enrolled members. N W Gaines extension specialist will headline the afternoon program with entertainment by the Fredrickson trio and Liberty twins from Stromsburg.
At a meeting last Thursday officials set up a cooperative cold storage locker system. Herman A. Jones is president, Mrs Gaace Hahn vice president, and Lloyd Treadway secretary. An advisory committee will guide 400 signers and four signers per precinct will recruit participants. A follow up meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17.
Polk County voters are thanked for the vote in Tuesday's primary election. Aubin Anderson expresses gratitude for the confidence and support received in the political contest.
