The Lincoln Journal touts near state-wide reach with fast news from world events. Notices mention University of Nebraska seniors Dorothy Whitacre and Doyle Sundberg receiving degrees and local social updates from August events and travels in Denver York and beyond.
Between 30 and 40 Polk band members traveled to York Friday afternoon for a swim and picnic supper at Harrison Park. After supper they went roller skating.
The WSCS of Polk Methodist Church met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Paul Walker as worship leader and program hosts including Mrs. Lindberg and Mrs. Skinner. An August 21 vesper service and choir robes fund drive were announced, plus numerous local visits and guest details across families in the Polk area.
Polk County Extension announces seed wheat cleaning with the Weed District portable cleaner starting August 15. Farmers should list seed amounts, names, and addresses at the Extension Office. Homer Brigham of Shelby will operate the equipment. State Fair tickets are on sale with discounts for shared books. 4-H County Committee meeting covered fair program planning and awards, with a Rosette Ribbon and cash prizes sponsored by Farm Bureau and American Legion Post 91. New class additions include Light Horse colts under two and 1949 farm calves shown halter.
Mr and Mrs N L Noble of Old Greenwich Conn visited Mr and Mrs Leonard Warnick and son Thursday. Miss Delores Dahlin left Saturday for Minneapolis. Sharon Hoffman daughter of Mr and Mrs Darryl Hoffman visited Sharon Adelson. Horace Stevens and family visited Harold Nelson in Stromsburg. Nobie Warnick and family visited Rueben Erin Thursday evening. Frank Adelson and Mrs Willard Adelson visited Mrs Roy Nelson at York hospital.
Jose Barrera a salesman for an insurance firm was arrested in Polk County after admitting theft of a radio and clock from the Rolenc home on the county line. The car trunk held the stolen goods. Barrera denied guilt until police interrogation. He is jailed on a 1000 dollar bond and bound over for district court.
The Polk County Fair features a Nationwide Crochet Contest trophy with entrants urged to enter. Fans are invited to contact the Fair Secretary’s office to learn how to participate and win the prize.
Mrs. Joe Johnston reached 75 on Monday with a large gathering including Mr. and Mrs. Elwyn Johnson and families and many Sandell relatives. Nearby, Orlie Adelson and Marion Harvey hosted guests from Broken Bow and Clarks, while Krause and Zuver families traveled between Lincoln and Polk. Mrs. Ollie Westfall and Danny left for Alaska with Dr. Westfall. Martha Westfall visited North Platte en route back to Polk.
Mrs. Ruth Green resigned last Monday from Polk Progress to work in Central City with a daughter. New editor is Mrs. Merle Stromberg who will manage the paper and solicit ads and news. Office hours adjust with Fridays closed. subscriptions still taken at Davis Pharmacy evenings.
The annual day church school at Arborville Congregational opened last Monday with an enrollment of fifty. Classes cover Bible, Christian living and hand crafts. Staff includes Mrs. Harold Bedient, Mr. and Mrs. Deitrick Goertzen, Mrs. Harvey Priesen, Mrs. Harry Guidinger, Mrs. Rudolf Friesen, Mrs. Ernest Salco, Mrs. Hillis Sterner, Florence Shockey and Gwendolynne Eaton.
The Rev. E. Earle Eaton and family spent last week at Camp Polk for the annual junior Pilgrim Fellowship summer conference. Eaton manages the group while his daughter Gwen dolyn serves as counsellor. Gloria and Constance Eaton were attendants. Hope Gwendolynn and LaVerne E. Nicholson joined as Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. John Blair. LaVerne Nicholson of Grand Island visited the Eaton family for the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs Edwin Lewis hosted Sunday dinner with Laurence Twarling. Dinners and visits spanned Franklin Axtell York Chicago and Lincoln as neighbors and relatives shared time at various homes and trips. Raymond Johnson planned a Black Hills Yellowstone trip. Evelyn and Carolyn Oquist attended a Chicago wedding.
Two inebriated gentlemen stumble through a fourteen minute vaudeville style act at the Polk County Fair. Their tricks backfire turning objects to something else, vanishing, or exploding as they teeter on a ladder and trapeze, keeping the audience in stitches.
Nimrod Noreen returned home from Moline Illinois where he visited his sisters Mrs Norman H Amundsen and Mrs Ralph Hearn and their families and other relatives. Local residents attended showers and picnics with plans for Green's Chapel picnic on August 7 at Ansell Lindquist's pasture and trips to Minnesota Chicago and Kansas City.
