The Polk Volunteer Fire Department plans a benefit ball on May 12 at Havens Ballroom. Tickets cost $1 from firefighters or local merchants, with proceeds for new smoke and gas masks. Duffy Belorad Orchestra will provide music.
The community mourns the sudden death of Mrs. Curtis Flodman age 57 who died Sunday at Stromsburg Hospital after entering earlier that day. Survivors include her husband Curtis and two sons Wayland and Burdette. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday.
During Dennis Jacobsen’s Marquette farm sale on Thursday Don Quick found his car missing. A sixteen year old escapee from the Boy's Industrial School at Kearney was later captured in Omaha after abandoning the Quick car near Dwight and continuing in another stolen vehicle. Don met the youth Saturday when he returned to the site.
Mrs Hannah Hahn recalled the night Doyle Hahn CN called from Agana Guam at 2 30 am Friday 6 30 pm Guam time. The pair heard each other clearly though the three minute chat felt brief. The call was arranged after Mrs Hahn received notice Thursday evening.
A miscellaneous shower honored Thelma Rystrom of Stromsburg, bride of Wallace Lind, Sunday evening. Nearly fifty guests attended Thursday afternoon at Swede Plain Church parlors. Green and yellow decor adorned the room as aunts and cousins of the groom hosted, and Thelma received many lovely and useful gifts.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Franson and Gloria Adelson of Lincoln stayed as overnight guests at the Martha Larson home on Saturday night.
The local American Legion Post announced that candidate Jack Larkin was accepted for Boy's State with seven selected from the 25th unicameral district. Bill McNaught was chosen as the alternate to Boy's State.
Reports of alfalfa damage from the Army Cutworm have reached the extension office. The worm hides under trash or in small cracks and causes stunting. Control relies on bait mash or sprays. effective when air warmth reaches 60 degrees or higher.
On Tuesday noon a fire at Walter Fisher farm damaged about 1800 bushels of corn and a hog house. Husks blown toward the hog house ignited straw, burning Mr. Fisher’s hands as he moved debris to save the corn. He, with third degree burns, was taken to York Hospital by his son Ralph. Polk Fire Department battled the blaze but limited water and a faulty suction pump hampered efforts. damage initially estimated at $4000.00.
Jerry King posted a 6:00.8 mile at the Columbus Invitational Track and Field meet last Thursday. Despite bad weather, his time stood as the best in the event and earned him the Irank Barnes Jr. Memorial Traveling Trophy.
Kenneth Stewart was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary to the Court of Ak-Sar-Ben for Polk following the resignation of Leo Wurtz. Wurtz had succeeded late Frank Davis, a longtime Ak-Sar-Ben ambassador in the community.
A bridal shower for Patricia Jones was hosted Thursday evening at the Clifford Quick home near Hordville. Hostesses included Mrs. Ray Sundberg Mrs. M W Erickson Hastings Mrs. Clifford Quick Mrs. Wilbur Jones and Mrs J A Jones of Hordville. Games and a two course lunch followed by gifts and a coaster wagon titled Howard's Dog House featured among the items.
The Busy Bee 4 H Club met Saturday afternoon at Bruce and Charles Cramer’s home. Leader Rev. Anderson demonstrated tools and their uses. All but one member attended. Mrs. Cramer served a nice lunch after the meeting. Arlan Stromberg, reporter.
The Polk Schools second grade shows 5 girls and 14 boys making it the most unevenly balanced class. Names listed include Harvey Blase Joan Sanidell Carol Marie Carlstrom and teacher Mildred Sterner. Kathleen Jensen later moved to Lincoln reducing the girl count.
American Legion Auxiliary in Polk to hold Poppy Day on May 1 with Mrs. Ardis Wilhelms as chairman. At a recent meeting Jean Ekdahl og read the prize essay My America Citizenship What It Means To Me and received a pen from President Mrs. Jo Ostberg. The unit sent a gift to a hospitalized nurse contributed $5 to the cancer fund and mailed five laundry bags to the Veterans Hospital.
A large turnout attended the Community Dinner at the Community Hall sponsored by the Polk Commercial Club. President Lloyd Kroger led a brief business meeting after, then Jack Bailey shared films from his recent trips to Mexico. A skit promoting the Minister Show Tuesday night was performed by Kenneth Bower, Kenneth Werner, and Bill McNaught.
The marriage of Miss Ruby Ann Jones and LeRoy C Bills was solemnized Sunday afternoon April 4, 1954 at the Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Panama City Florida. The Rev Hugh Pyle officiated at the double ring candlelight ceremony amid white floral arrangements. Matron of honor Mrs Earle Mitchell of Houston wore yellow net and carried blue carnations. bridesmaid Miss Amy Sorrell wore blue net. mother of the bride wore navy Crepe. best man Prentiss Wilson. ushers Roy Otto and Elmer Weter. The bride wore white nylon tulle with lace and carried a white Bible with white rosebuds. Reception followed. Continuous story continued on page eight.
