Arborville Town Hall Club Schedules April Meeting

The Arborville Town Hall Club will meet April 20 at eight o clock and show the film Regimented Rain Drops in a program by the executive committee. George Myers and Dale York auctioneers will conduct a box supper sale after the program. Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Shenk and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wochner will serve coffee. Public invited to attend.

Birthday observance gatherings mark Mrs Light’s anniversary

In honor of Mrs Oscar Gustaf’s son’s birthday anniversary relatives visited Mrs Irvin Light last Tuesday afternoon. On Friday evening a larger group gathered including Rev and Mrs Long, Mr and Mrs Gembroth, Mr and Mrs Wilshusen, Mr and Mrs Carl Wilshusen of York, Elmer Wilshusen, Alton Driewer family, Raymond Sagehorn and Gary, and Mrs Bill Lavelle with Bobbie and Mary Light.

Polk High School News Updates on Upcoming Activities

No school on Good Friday April 15 and three o'clock dismissal Thursday. Senior Play tickets on sale at Davis Pharmacy this weekend for April 22. Fifth term ending. report cards handed out Wednesday afternoon. Junior delegates named for Cornhusker Boys and Girls State June 4 to 12 with alternates listed. Contest ratings for vocal and instrumental groups announced. Thanks extended to parents who drove to Fullerton for the music department activities.

Fishermen open catfish season with proof at Genoa

Rebekah Lodge District 14 Holds 22nd Annual Session

The 22nd annual session of district 14 of the Rebekah Lodge was held in Rising City on Thursday April 7 with 106 present. The program included business drills a report on the IOOF Home by Matron Meinig and a school of instruction led by state assembly president Nellie Downey. Iva Cramer was elected to the staff of District Officers for the coming year. Twelve Polk jurisdiction members attended.

Country Women’s Club meets in April style show

The Country Womens Club gathered Tuesday afternoon April 5 at Mrs Adolph Forss home with assistance from Mrs Richard Widga and Mrs Raymond Sundberg. Mrs Grant Johnson and Mrs Richard Cramer led an interesting program while members dressed in styles of yester year. Mrs Mervin Samuels won first prize. Officers elected: Mae Johnson president, Ida Mae Coover vice president, Edna Steinbeck secretary, Alice Willits assistant secretary, Myrtle Johnson treasurer.

Doyle Gustafson of Polk is admitted to the University of Nebraska Dental College for fall. The university accepted 33 applicants from among several hundred statewide selections.

Weekend Visit Spans Grand Island to Omaha

Mr and Mrs Ross Goethe and daughter of Grand Island spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Van Bush and Harriett. Mrs Clarence Bodine of Hard ville and the Sandells visited Omaha on business. Van Bush and Harriett visited Van Bush at Stromsburg hospital Thursday. The Sandells visited Mrs Joe Johnson in the Rudolph Gustafson home Sunday afternoon.

Polk County reports April events and 4-H notes including 37th Feeders Day on April 22 at College of Agriculture with a 9 15 a m start. Oats and barley cleaning schedules are outlined along highways Osceola and Shelby with praise for Homer Brigham. 4 H Livestock Clubs observe father son partnerships and district meetings while Shelby Wranglers and Silver Creek Saddle Clubs plan spring activities and county fair horsemanship.

The Woman's Missionary Society of the Stromsburg District met April 7 1949 at Fridhem Lutheran Church Hordville Nebraska with Grace Lutheran Cen tral City assisting. Theme The Lord Is Thy Keeper. Miss Ethel Akins spoke on China service over 20 years. Rev Wm Jacobson of Zion Newman Grove spoke and plans to go to Africa. Local social visits span York Hastings and Lincoln

Mrs Henry Sandell and several relatives visited in York on Thursday while Clarence Munn and children from Central City spent the evening with Mrs Green. Mrs Arthur Gustafson came from Lincoln for a visit before returning home. The Branting family moved into the John Faulk house in east Polk. Van Bush was hospitalized in Stromsburg and returned home the same week. Mrs Homer Green and Merlin met the Lindburgs in Stromsburg. Mrs Neltie Nelson visited her husband at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln last Sunday.

Leaders Training Meeting Brings 4 H Leaders and Agents Together

Four 4 H Club leaders and the Home Agent attended a training session at York focusing on Foods Clothing and Homemaking. State Extension Specialists Allegra Wilkins Dorothea Holstein and Charlotte Reiche led sessions. A similar meeting is planned for Columbus on May 14.

Legion Auxiliary Meeting Sets Work and Tea Honor

The American Legion Auxiliary met April 11 at the Legion Club Rooms. Twenty members answered roll call. The group donated $10 to the Child Welfare fund and planned sewing for the hospital plus a tea for Gold Star members. Marilyn Dahlin was chosen for Girls State at Lincoln in June. Sheralee Hill gave a reading. A luncheon was served by Mesdames Steenbock Ostberg Loyd Hanquist and Arnold Neuhaus.

Mrs Hannah Gabrielson plans to live with her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Arthur Gustafson. Several families visit in Lincoln Stromsburg and Polk including Mrs Jake Harding Mr Ben Peterson and Mrs Mc Coy. A stroke endangers Mamie Ziegelbein at Veterans Hospital Lincoln. WSCS met with guest speaker Mrs Clifford Penrose from Japan and offered lunch and readings. An eight pound fourteen ounce baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs Owen Bedient in Stromsburg Hospital.

Young Adult Group Meets at Methodist Church

The Methodist Church Young Adult Group met in the church parlor on a Sunday evening with senior youths as guests. Mrs. Glen Hill and Mrs. Lloyd Hahn led the program including a Patricia Williams solo and an Easter reading by Mrs. Hill. About 30 people shared lunch afterward.

Lemke Family Heads North for Health Recovery

Rev and Mrs Paul Lemke and daughter Marilyn drove to Madison Minnesota Monday for Mrs Lemke to recuperate from a nervous illness. Marilyn will attend school there while Rev Lemke returns to Polk on Wednesday. Local gatherings and visits are noted elsewhere in the community.

Village Clean-up Days Set for April 19 and 20

The Village Board designates April 19 and 20 as annual Clean-up Days with rubbish placed in containers and near the alley as in previous years. Bonfires on streets are now forbidden.

Will Rudy of Grand Island passed away at St. Francis Hospital Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Wednesday at two o clock at the Grand Island Funeral Home. He was a brother in law of Mrs. Sadie Clark and Henry Cramer of Polk.

Village Board approves lights and elects trustees in Polk

The Polk village board met April 5 1949 at 7 30 P M with all members present. Minutes treasurer report and light and water commission reno were approved. New lights purchase from Korsmeyer Co along the highway were authorized. Election results named Charles Peterson Leo Wurtz as two year trustees and Everett Green Mrs Paul Strand re elected to District No 72 school board. Ordinance 122 passed and numerous bills approved.
