Major General Booth dies at age 79 in Washington DC

Major General Elling E. Booth United States Army retired dies at Walter Reed Hospital Washington DC at 79. He is survived by daughter Pearl L. Thomas and grandson Booth Thomas. Booth served with MacArthur's staff in the Philippines and held top SS and American forces roles in 1919 1920. He commanded the First Cavalry Division at Fort Bliss and headed the Philippine Department until his 1934 retirement. After his wife died in 1943 he moved to the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles.

Shower Honors Miss Norma Newton At Vergil Bush Home

A miscellaneous shower was held on March 31 for Miss Norma Newton at the Vergil Bush home. Twenty one ladies attended with games and yellow and white decor. Norma received many fine gifts and a two course luncheon was served by hostesses Margaret Newton Hattie Lindquist Mervin Shenk Ray Werner and Vergil Bush.

Birthday gatherings honor multiple local residents

A series of birthday celebrations filled homes across the community. Notable parties included Mrs. Eklund of York and Mrs. Ruth Green hosting family and neighbors, with guests from Central City and Stromsburg joining in. The week featured dinners and luncheons for Leon, Mr. Hahn, Mrs. Stellar, and Mrs. Sundberg with relatives and friends in attendance.

Polk Ladies Attend Goldhuskers Convention

Mrs Levert Peterson Mrs I L Anderson of Stromsburg and Mrs Glenn Hilland Mrs L W Hahn of Polk attended the Goldhuskers convention at the Lincoln Hotel over the weekend. The trio took part in a Saturday panel discussion and Mrs Hahn was elected secretary of the state organization. York will host the 1950 convention. On Monday the three visited the state legislature.

Allen Ziegelbein Wins Poster Contest of York Union

Allen Ziegelbein of Polk won first place in the York Circuit Lutheran Choral Union poster contest for the Easter concert at York auditorium eight o clock. Forty four entries from grades five to eight were judged by a panel of ten. names were unknown to judges. Some fifth graders earned honorable mention in a close contest.

Obituary of Carrie E Smith longtime churchwoman dies

Carrie E daughter of James and Elizabeth Welsh was born March 21 1870 in Brussels Ontario Canada and died March 27 1949 at Asbury Hospital Salina Kansas at 79. She moved to St Paul Nebraska in 1873 grew to womanhood joined Methodists later Free Methodist Church and served faithfully. She married Joseph Frain in 1886 who preceded her in 1901 37 1. in 1909 she wed Rev F E Eaton and served as pastor and district superintendent in Nebraska. Eaton died in 1926. In 1927 she married Rev A F Smith and helped rear four motherless children while serving as pastor’s wife in Nebraska. Smith retired in 1935. Illness in 1945 left her bedbound. cared for by her husband until his death in 1948. Survived by four stepchildren Evelyn McAllaster Harold R Smith Lola McCray Helen Johnson and many relatives and friends. Known for service to Women’s Missionary Society and church aid.

Gary Upton of York stays with grandparents while his mother is at Stromsburg hospital. Rev. Charles Snyder and Ira Spear attended Free Methodist meetings in Nebraska City. Merrick County New Horse Club held a dance at Fullerton Friday night. Johnnie Preston and two daughters of York visited grandmother Mrs. Hennie Seymour for dinner.
