Willard Cornell Named New Polk County Sheriff
Willard Cornell was chosen Thursday April 6 to succeed the late Gun nard Peterson as Polk County sheriff. Cornell has lived in Polk since 1940, working with Wright Bros Elevator Co and periods in Shelby and Osceola. Lee Johnson, Peterson’s former deputy, will serve under Cornell after the appointment by the Board of County Commissioners.

Grade School Play Draws Large Crowd
The Pied Piper of Hamelin was staged at the Polk high school auditorium on Wednesday night April 5 by Polk elementary students. Bill McNaught led as the Pied Piper with strong casting and pipe playing. Bruce Walker played the Hamelin Mayor, Sondra Hill excelled as the mayor's wife, and Dorothy Jean Ekdahl charmed as the daughter. Larry Cramer and Kathleen Holmes portrayed the councillor and his wife, Jim Cuda acted as their son, and Marvelle Scott and Denny Cramer gave strong performances. A rhythm band led by Linda Johnson, a choral reading, and a Marilyn Olson piano piece complemented the three-act program arranged by Misses Betty Anderson Elaine Lampshear Elaine Ludvigson and Mrs Jess Bradley for a very enjoyable evening.

Polkites Crowd Church for Easter Service
Polkites filled the Methodist and Evangelical Free churches for Easter worship. At the Methodist church the choir led with Now Is Christ Risen and solo It Was For Me by Mrs Arthur Hemmingson of Shafter. Mobile Blood Unit to Visit Polk County April 18
The Mobile Blood Unit returns to Osceola on April 18 with hours 11 am to 5 pm set at the Polk County Courthouse. Donors are urged to give blood, avoid eating four hours prior, and many thanks are given to sponsors and volunteers led by Mrs. Carl Johnson. The Red Cross will provide lunch, and the St Francis Hospital maintains a county blood bank with Omaha supplying rare types if needed.

Polk Kids Get New Playground from American Legion
The Polk children will gain a new playground funded by the American Legion. City crews remove and trim trees while lights are installed and ground seeded. Five hundred dollars worth of playground equipment will be provided for all ages, creating a well kept park along the highway for the community.

Gunnard Reynold Peterson died suddenly on April 1 1950 at age 66 years nine months and one day Born June 30 1883 in Moline Illinois he was the eldest of seven children He married Selma Sander March 28 1906 they had six children He lived in Polk County Nebraska California and Stromsburg before serving as Polk County Sheriff from 1934 until his death He leaves wife three daughters one son eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren Funeral services were held April 5 at the Stromsburg Baptist Church with interment in Osceola Cemetery
