A local feature sketches George Ditloff debating a beard for centennial year 1970, reflections on beards’ social meanings, and a digression into Indians’ hair and missionary campaigns. It ends with a tease for Butch Mills’ garage equipment sale and Ralph Branting’s combined tools.
The Polk Progress office will be closed Thursday to Saturday April 9 to 11 and will reopen Monday April 13 for business.
The Polk Bloodmobile event sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary on March 27 gathered 63 pints of blood from 66 donors toward a 71 pint goal. Pins awarded included 2 gallon honors for Mrs Willard Adelson and Lennis Lind. one gallon for Mrs Harvey Sundberg, Mrs Roland Bodine, and Mrs Lowell Bills. First time donors honored and many volunteers thanked for assisting in daylong duties.
Vote totals listed for candidates Dale Lindburg Harold Carlson Robert Clymer Roger Merchant Karen Harrington Gilbert Lampshire Calice Robert Brazda N. E. McNaught Lyle Dornburgh Vern Jones and others. Total votes cast show School 211 Village 130 with multiple write ins and partial spellings.
Mrs John Kruse 69 died at her daughter s home in Seattle after a lingering illness. Former Polk resident Rosella Brauer, she taught art in Seattle public schools. Services were held April 6 in Seattle. Survivors include husband John a son Harwood Spokane two daughters Twila Gagnon and Janelle Kemmerling Seattle seven grandchildren and three sisters Bartle Baack York Sam Wall Hampton Leo Wurtz Denver.
Paul Stevens was elected president of the Polk Farmers Co op Grain Assoc at a recent reorganizational meeting. Ed Dobberstein is vice president and Don Hudson secretary treasurer. Lee Anderson and Robert Willits are directors with Bruce Bedient and Frances Tewell as junior board members. Dean Myers, manager, reports patronage refunds of 36850 and 7200 in interest on over 7000 shares. Gross revenue exceeded 161000 with expenses 96000. Total assets total 943763. Wheat purchases fell nine percent from 1968 to 1969 while milo down five percent and corn up four percent with volume over 1850000. Soybean purchases rose 38 percent and fertilizer sales increased. Coal sales rose slightly.
In Hardville and Polk items the rush of ads filled space that would host news. News from North Blue and other local stories were postponed to next week as advertising dominated the page.
Funeral services were held for Dwight Doremus 26 and Donna 23 at Swede Home eight miles east of Hastings after a head on crash at 1 a.m. Saturday that killed six. Also mourned were Frank Rice 24, Linda Rice 19, Michael Moon 18, and Linda Gates 17. Surviving relatives include parents, grandparents, and several siblings. Dwight and Donna were engaged. others were dating. Interment was in Stromsburg Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Rudolph Gustafson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at Hardville Baptist Church on Sunday March 29 from 2 to 4 30 PM. Hosts were their children Dean Weimer Omaha and Doyle Gustafson Lincoln.

Mr and Mrs Ronnie Helden of Hampton announce the birth of a son on April 3 at Aurora hospital weighing 8 pounds 12 ounces.
