Hog Killing in NFO Campaign Sparks Farm Protest

Polk County NFO supporters argue aggressive consolidation by packers and processors threatens farm livelihoods. They claim government giveaways fail, urge actions to halt monopolies under the Capper-Volstead Act, and frame hog culling as a survival measure to draw attention to agricultural distress.

York Elks honor district dramatics students and seniors

Mrs Art Nilson and seven dramatics students attended the District Dramatics Contest at Marquette with thirty schools represented. Students Nancy Eisler Connie LaVelle Shelly Ramsey Jolene Myers Tonya Anderson and others earned Superior Excellent Good in categories including Public Speaking Drama Prose Literature and Interpretative Address. Polk seniors Dan Graves Kay Nielsen and Loren Wilshusen joined a York banquet March 26 with speaker Vince Collura of Lincoln. Final plans for a May 27 to July 5 summer term were approved by Supt Walter Nielsen for courses in language arts math science and phys ed health. parents of attending students will be contacted soon.

Local Residents Share Sunday Visits and Birthday Celebrations

Mrs Melvin Bender visited her mother Mrs Cecil Eaton in Central City after a hospital release. The Benders hosted Richard Jonsson’s family Saturday night in Clark. Paul Stevens joined James Brazda Sr for Sunday supper. Dr and Mrs Herbert Fiedler hosted a Sunday dinner with several guests from Hastings and Stromsburg. Central City women accompanied Mrs Albin Lindquist in Grand Island for a birthday celebration. Merton Flodman and Lee Hanson dined with Carroll Flodman and Robin to honor Carroll's birthday.

Mrs Jessie Peterson Celebrates 90th Birthday

Mrs Jessie Peterson of Denver Colorado former Polk resident marked her 90th birthday at her son Charles Peterson’s home. Attending dinner Sunday March 24 were Ralph Peterson of Columbus Ohio Lloyd and Charles Peterson with their spouses, Stanley Margaret Peterson of Denver Leroy and Nathan Peterson, and Mrs George Burnet of San Mateo California.

Four Polk County Men Inducted For Armed Forces

Four Polk County registrants from local board No. 75 were sent to Omaha for induction on March 26. Timothy Ray Anderson Ellis Gene Waller James Elroy Hoffman and Carol Paul Jones received small New Testaments from the Gideon International via the Polk County Division. Presenters were Wallace Sandell and Rudolph Nyberg. Seven others were sent for physical exams. the April call for induction is set for the 22nd with three men required.

Central City visitors and bridal shower honor

Mr and Mrs Dale Nyberg and their boys visited the Richard Johnsons in Central City on Sunday. A miscellaneous shower at Immanuel Lutheran Church honored Mrs Robert Rahrs, a recent bride, with Mrs Merton Flodman Mrs Lee Hanson and Mrs Caroll Flodman in attendance.

Burney Family Trip Spans Ten States Visit Friends

Mr and Mrs Dwight Burney returned from a two month tour through ten southern and western states visiting relatives and friends. They saw Mrs Burney’s daughter in Healdsburg California and the Wrights in Sacramento. In Phoenix they met Senator Barry Goldwater during the National Horse Show.
