Polk County Taxpayers Pay Despite Low Mood Periods

Polk County records show over 90 percent tax collection across 1930 to 1935, with only up to seven percent of taxpayers failing to meet obligations in any year. County treasurer LeRoy M. Smith notes real estate personal and poll taxes all contribute to strong compliance, despite drought, dust storms, and economic malaise.

No-Fund Check Penalty for Floyd Paben

Floyd Paben of near Hampton was fined $25 and ordered to pay costs of $16.28 on a no-fund check charge by County Judge Scott Monday. The check dated February 13 was payable to R. L. Anderson of Hordville and signed by Paben. It was drawn on the First State Bank of Hordville Aurora Republican Register.

Polk school board members Henry Horstman Elmer Hanquist W A Stevens M G Lindburg and Oscar Sundberg visited Stromsburg Benedict York McCool Henderson and Aurora last Thursday. They met with local officials to gather ideas for a new school building here and noted Stromsburg’s modern facilities as a model to avoid past mistakes.

Business men attended a Band Benefit program in Hordville Monday night featuring Pork and his German Band followed by a farewell song from a quartet. Attendees from the area included W. P. A nine pound baby born to Mr. and Mrs Axel Rudeen at a Central City hospital. Funeral services for Mrs. Raymond Dobson were held near Gresham and Stromsburg with services at Wayland church. The Woman's Civic Improvement Club elected officers for the coming year and heard a talk on Art and Interior Decorating. Mary Erickson won first in humorous contest at Genoa sub district. Miss Arlen Deay and Fred Youngdahl married at the Methodist church in Stromsburg. A farewell for Rev. and Mrs. Hedberg was held at Stromsburg Baptist Church ahead of their Portland assignment. Visitors included Wayne Jackson of Kansas City. Mrs. A. B. Hedbloom and Mrs. Erickson traveled to Grand Island for further travel.

Fire in Quillen building sparks crowd in early hours

A blaze was detected between the Quillen building and the old hotel building late last night, likely from defective wiring. Fire crews arrived quickly and contained the fire before serious damage, drawing a large crowd in the early hours.

Lois Cockle and families from Kearney visited Arborville for Easter. A 4 H Club was organized at Ester Lackey’s home with the theme A Girls Room and a Place to Live. Thais Belle Lackey hosted Polk High Freshman Class at her home. Neighbors surprised Mrs. Charles Buchfinch for her birthday with baskets and a friendly visit. Bedients visited the F Bedient home in Waco and other relatives over the weekend.

Death of C. E. Cohagen in Corvallis Oregon

C E Cohagen a former Polk resident died at his Corvallis home on March 16 after two months illness. He was born April 25 1873 in Utica Nebraska and married Emma Larson in 1902. Survivors include his wife son Clifford and two sisters. Funeral and burial details are listed.

Country Women’s Club Holds Quilting Meeting at Widge Home

Sale of liquor to be voted on here

As a result of petitions circulated and on file with the Village Clerk the question as to whether liquor by the drink and by the package shall be sold in Polk will be placed on the ballot to be voted on at the coming Village election to be held on April 6. A copy of the sample ballot containing this issue, also the nominees for the village board of trustees and for the school board, will be found on another page of this issue.

The bride, a Stromsburg high school graduate class of 1933 and California Beauty School Omaha alumna, has operated a beauty shop in Osceola. The groom studied in Kansas City Missouri and worked at Farmers Oil Station Stromsburg. They rented a farm five miles north of Polk and are at home to friends.

Maurer Denies Ownership of Suspected Still Near Silver Creek

Reports say Grover Maurer denied owning or using a large alcohol still found on his Grover Maurer farm near Silver Creek. Officers seized a steel tank and copper pieces after a prior visit, with Maurer claiming the tank was found a year ago and intended as a water tank. A separate search at John Reed’s liquor store found an opened whiskey bottle but no untaxed liquor.
