Local unemployment office reports 300 men issued ecards in two weeks. 275 placed in paving and river projects. About 32 local workers and 20 Iowa men are involved in mat weaving and rock paving for riverbank protection and pile driving. Central office for labor supply to manage calls as construction progresses.
Louis Neitzel of Murdock spoke at the First Methodist Church during Sunday school hour addressing the Y M B C and Philathea class. He also delivered the morning sermon, praised as a worthwhile and sincere contribution to county Christian education work.
Bandits who stole a car and wrecked it near Don Dammast Thursday night vanished after the mishap. Officers and possemen searched the abandonment region but found no trace or solid clue. Sightings placed the men in various parts of eastern Nebraska with no definite location.
A large crowd from the city and surrounding area attended a Sunday dinner at the Knights of Columbus hall served by the Catholic Daughters of America. The menu offered a broad selection of dishes.
LaVinter Troop from west of Mynard was taken to Omaha on Sunday for treatment at University hospital. She was accompanied by her mother who returned home. The young woman has suffered from summer flu for some time and will undergo a course of treatment.
The American College of Surgeons will announce its annual approved hospitals list at the 16th hospital standardization conference in Chicago. Nebraska entries include Starkson Memorial St Joseph Twucias county Evangelical Covenant Immanuel Methodist St Catherine University of Nebraska hospital with several others in Alliance Beatrice Columbus Grand Island Hastings Lincoln Scottsbluff and Mee Cook. West Nebraska Methodist Episcopal Hospital is provisionally approved.
Plattsmouth representatives head to Hastings for the Nebraska Federation of Woman's Clubs annual convention. Mrs. Robert Reed presides, with Mrs. James T Begley on the election committee and Mrs. E H Wescott as a departmental head. Mrs. P H Murdick Jr of Elizabeth New Jersey and Mrs. Robert B Hayes also attend. Most depart today with Mrs Hayes leaving Tuesday. the session runs through Thursday.
Miss Laura Grassman who recently had surgery at St. Catherine's hospital in Omaha arrived Sunday to spend the week with her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs R A Bates and her brother Hillard Grassman and family She is reporting well and recovering nicely and should resume her usual activities soon
The wedding of Miss Geneva Lar lson and Frank A. Anderson, both of Omaha, took place Saturday afternoon at the office of County Judge A. H. Duxbury. The ceremony was witnessed by A. W. Farmer and A. E. Edgerton. The bridal party then motored to their Omaha home.
Miss Clara Goos and Mr. John A. Libershal wed Monday night at 8 pm in a quiet ceremony read by Father George Agius. The couple, long-time city residents, will start housekeeping at Fifth and Oak streets with a wedding dinner at the Weidman home.
Plattsmouth high school started its debate program after school on Monday with an expected 25 members this year. A weiner roast is planned for next Thursday at 6 30 to kick off the season. Officers include President Earl Lamberson Vice president Lois Meade treasurer Lois Giles reporter Ellen Kelly Membership chairman Mildred Cacy Entertainment chairman Virginia Trively Finance chairman Fred Fricke. Coach is Mr Figley.
Fire badly damaged the Cook family home in the south part of the city on Saturday. Neighbors helped move items to safety as the piano jammed at the doorway and was moved out with effort. The fire department arrived and controlled the blaze after significant damage occurred.
George Conis of the Palace Shining parlor installs a hat cleaning and repairing department machine. The device will aid rapid blocking and ironing of hats and marks a fine addition to the department.
Chester Welshimer of South Chicago avenue unearthed several unusually large potatoes while harvesting. He brought one specimen to the Journal weighing four and a quarter pounds, described as ample enough to feed a typical family.
Governor Bryan stated he would revive the mortgage conciliation board in Lincoln if it can close the gap between present mortgages and potential government loans. He urged Morgenthau for broader powers and funds, and questioned the need for frequent Washington trips by the board’s chairman.
The Plattemouth town team could not secure a game for Sunday delaying the season opener a week. Coaches will run intensive workouts while the squad trains for a strong season aided by funds from Saturday’s benefit dance at the American Legion building.
The Burlington Railroad drew Iowa seniority men to handle a surge in Nebraska traffic. Havelock projects show two or more weeks of work monthly for all 400 men in winter. Extra freights have become common as freight demand rises. Every brakeman in Lincoln Omaha and Wymore districts is at work with Nebraska wheat harvest driving twenty additional hires.
A. G. Bach, well known merchant, continues to improve and is able to be around his home. He cannot yet resume his store duties but it is hoped he will return to work soon.
A large Dovey family reunion gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Falter in Falls City to honor George E. Dovey the pioneer of Nebraska. Most of his children attended with one daughter Mrs Jack Hazzard of New York City absent. Attendees came from Kansas Illinois Minnesota and Iowa for a day of dining visiting and reunion activities concluding with several members returning home. Captain Floyd Harding and his wife and children joined before departing Fort Snelling.
The Westminster Guild of the Presbyterian church met at Miss Gertrude Vallery’s home with many members present. Miss Friedda Hughes spoke on The Ten Lepers and will join as a social member. Visitors Valda Dysart Catherine Hirz Marie Vallery attended and will become members.
About twelve members of the Plattsmouth Rotary Club visited Red Oak Iowa for an intercity meeting with Platte City Nebraska City Shenandoah Glenwood and Atlantic. Judge A H Duxbury spoke for Plattsmouth and violinist George Jeager performed with E H Wescott on piano. Attendees from Plattsmouth included Fred L Rea George Jeager E H Wescott A H Duxbury Frank A Cloidt L O Minor L S Devoe Fred Lugsch C A Rosencrans Carl Ofe and high school students Maynard McCleary and Herbert Minor.
Harry Conklin land commissioner of Nebraska spent a brief stop in the city today while en route to the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. He chatted with Carl Schneider of the Plattsmouth State Bank, an old friend, for a few moments during the visit.
Hugh J. Kearns post American Legion met at the community building to set the date for its annual officer election. The election will occur on October 31 with new officers taking office that night. Key posts include post commander two vice commanders and nine executive committee members.
Moving week on North 6th street as A. W. Cloidt family leaves the Parmale residence for the Cloidt home farther south. The P. H. Wohlfarth family moves from the Cloidt home to their new residence on upper Sixth street, now nearing completion and expected to be very comfortable.
Henry Starkjohn recently underwent eye surgery in Omaha for a growth and has returned home to continue treatment. Doctors hope the procedure will restore his eyesight in a few weeks.
Plattsmouth High School expects the class of 1934 to be the largest graduation yet with 69 seniors. The 1927 class held 62 graduates, while several recent classes exceeded fifty, reflecting rising enrollment from 1929 to 1933. The list names male graduates including Kenneth Armstrong and Joe Graves and female graduates such as Thyra Baumeart and Eleanor Black, with both groups slated to complete graduation requirements next spring.
A large gathering at T. E. Jennings home in Murray celebrated a thirty five plus year family reunion. Attendees from Iowa Nebraska and locally shared a cafeteria style dinner and renewed ties after decades apart.
A west county resident faced a peace complaint for threatening his younger brother during a long hearing. The case covered ownership, crops, road work and other matters, but the defendant’s hostile attitude prevailed. A peace bond of 500 dollars was set and the defendant jailed until the bond is provided. He must appear at the district court next term to show cause why the bond should not be continued.
